Xbox vs PS3

I was a hardcore PC gamer back in the day, but I don't know all that much about the modern consoles.
Want to get my 10y old son a console as a reward for getting fantastic grades. He plays on a Wii now, but want to move him up to Xbox or PS3.
I am leaning Xbox. Any clear advantages to PS3 (other than Blu-ray)? (and I won't get a Kinect until probably Christmas.)
Thanks in advance.

If he does play on XBL, he won't have a headset.
FWIW, he was playing World of Warcraft when he was 5, and by the time he was 6, he was playing in parties with people that had no idea he was a kid.
They all thought he was a foreigner that couldn't speak(type) English very well.

better exclusives on ps3 imo but for a kid that young I would think it really didn't matter. whatever his friends had i guess

Get him a ps3
That way you don't have a monthly fee for him to play online and if he wont have a headset, he'll fit right in even more.

If you are going to let him play online, the cheapest route is the PS3. XBL Gold is $60 a year. Most of the time, I'd say what exclusives interest you, but that might not matter much to a 10 year old.
And plus, blu ray. Always a strong selling point IMO.
ETA I'm slow.

I thought this was troll post at first
I only own xbox but I'm pefectly happy with it. Fwiw, it seems that most people I know that have both lean more to the xbox side than ps3.
And as far as cost, $60 is $5 a month. I couldn't tell you the difference in terms of online experience.

I can't really either besides the fact that XBL just plays way better.

Well one stopped working for three months last year.
But my 360 broke and I'm thinking of jumping to PS3. But I kind of like not having the consle eating my time away online right now.

The online stopped went down. The PS3 console is much better.

CcoloradoBengal, the best advice I can give you is to figure out what his friends play on and go by that. If his friends don't play on one or the other, then I would go with a ps3 for the exclusives and bluRay, especially if he likes movies. Otherwise Xbox is a good system for kids, especially with kinex.
