Xbox One Install Times

I bought an Xbox One and my chief complaint thus far is how long it takes to install a disk-based game.
It takes hours. I'm not sure what is going on but it is almost like it is trying to install the updates alongside the game data or is essentially downloading the game from the store using the disk to verify I own the game.

I had that issue with the digital games, but the hard copy's usually let me play in about 20-25 minutes. The entire upload takes about an hour though.
Did you just buy it? Reset any setting? Called support?

It might depend on the game. Halo 5 had a lot of updates in comparison to Rare Replay, but I am spoiled by 1-5 minute installs on PS4

I have no problems at all with install times. Something sounds wrong with your system.

I suspect that's not the case. By "no problems," how long is it taking you to install a disk based game, primarily one that has been out a few months? How fast is your internet?
Researching the issue, it would appear the only way to install straight off a disk is to disconnect from Xbox live.

Are you hardwired in? Don't ever use a console on Wifi, unless you just like wasting time.
Every game nowadays has an update. If a game came out tonight at midnight, there would be an update I'd have to download for it before I played it. So updates happen all the time. If you buy a game several months after it's been out then you're going to have to download all the updates.
Not complaining about you specifically OP, but it's just absolutely amazing how people think they're internet should be able to zap in multiple GB updates in seconds.

Comparison between the two systems is not the point but ultimately what I would like to be able to do is install the game straight off the disk and play while it downloads the updates. My PS4 let's me do this but unless I am missing something, the Xbox tries integrating internet updates with the install process.

I own both systems and I will admit that my Xbox does take longer it seem whenever I own the physical copy to get things rolling.
I don't know what game's your playing on PS4, but I know for sure that I can't play Destiny while an update is downloading, but that is a game where you're required to be online at all times. So I'm assuming that's it.
I honestly don't remember the last time I waited for 5+ minutes though to do something on my Xbone. The updates tend to download pretty quick, but I also have solid internet.

Halo had a massive like 30 GB day one update. Throw that on top of all of the other updates since then.

It depends on the game but I would say no more than 10 minutes at the absolute most.

Your "long install times", are a result of slow internet speeds..Unplug your network cable next time you install from a disc, then run the update when its done

But my question is, can I play a single player game I install off a disk while the updates are downloading?
Install and Update shouldn't be rolled into the same process but this seems to be the case.

not on Xbone...Updates take priority...You're thinking of playing from a disk, while the update downloads...Xbone just uses the disk for the license..the actual files are on the HD and you're installing/changing them so they're needed during the update

That's what I thought. I have to say that I'm not a fan of that design decision.
I know my internet is not the best, but it is pretty decent. I'd imagine most aren't going to want to sit through 10+ gigs of updates before they can play a game they've purchased.

You mean the MS machine lost it's only bragging point against the Sony machine?

Sales numbers beg to differ.
This is the way of things now.
Deal with it.
No different than buying a digital download and waiting for it to install.

First of all, not liking a design decision does not always lead to not buying the product. That said, what is the argument when the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One?
Not turning this thread into Xbox vs PlayStation, but you can't use sales figures in defense of this decision when the console is not selling as many units as the competition.
Secondly, what is the point of buying a physical disk if it's "no different than a digital download?". I would assume the disk installs the base game and the updates come from the internet.
I would think the PS4 behaves similarly in terms of installing from disk to the HD looking at the file sizes of most games I oen but I do not know how much of the disk is utilized post-install.

You can't play an online game while it updates. This for both consoles.
I don't play my PS4 often so whenever I play I have a ton of updates to download. I don't know why this surprises you with the Xbox One, especially with a game like Halo 5. They let people download that initial update like a week early for a reason.

You said your issue came from installing Halo
