Why do game developers sell to major publishers?

Reading all this stuff about how Activision is essentially initiating a hostile takeover of Blizzard, forcing them to cut costs by abandoning HotS and literally paying employees to quit the combat has me wondering why noteworthy game development studios like Blizzard and Bioware sell off to these faceless corporations like Activision and EA.
I actually think though that at least in the case of Blizzard, they were indirectly acquired by Activision, but studios that are bought by EA for example, are never the same afterwards.

The cost of making video games has increased dramatically, and these smaller studios require more capital to stay in business. EA buys them, and then its their way or the highway. Its akin to Walmart taking over in Rural areas, and making the mom and pop grocery stores shut down.

Marketing, Jobs, Capital

Developers need publishers though. Look what happened to Bungie after they left Microsoft. And they ended up signing with Activision. Maybe Microsoft wasn't so bad.

They call it selling out for a reason. The original founders or owners of these of these development studios make insane amounts of money when they sell to the big boys.
Hundreds of millions of dollars is hard to turn down.
Smaller, privately owned studios founded and run by gamers out of a love of games are NEVER going to be the same after a large, publicly traded corporation takes them over.
Still scarred after 20 years

Microsoft didn’t ruin Rare. If that was true, wouldn’t Bungie have sucked in the same period?
You can argue that Bungie went to shite without Microsoft.
It’s far more likely that Rare just had its best talent leave and just hasn’t been as successful at replacing that talent.
Microsoft has made some mistakes with developers here and there, sure. But they are in no way even remotely comparable to EA.
Also Banjo Kazooie sucks.

Well they obviously don't compare to EA in terms of sheer wake of destruction but nobody does.
The Rare buyout was just sort of the OG of high profile studio sellout ruinination. MS most definitely had a huge hand in Rare dying. Unlike EA, it appears Microsoft likely learned something from debacle because their subsequent acquisitions have actually gone pretty smoothly all things considered.

Some Goldeneye and Perfect Dark talent left to create Free Radical Design, known for the Timesplitters series. This was a couple years before the MSFT acquisition.
