i dont agree. i dont think the GOAT controller's GOATness is dependent on game+button layout. like if i had to chose your setup vs use any xbox or playstation controller to play goldeneye it wouldn't be a close decision.

It was made for Nintendo’s first true 3D capable console and they wanted to accommodate 2D stuff too, hence the two left hand “legs.”
Problem is developers got carried away and there were hardly any 2D games on it which was a shame - look at some of the awesome PS side scrollers like Symphony of the Night and the later Mega Man Xs.

I wasn’t claiming the original 64 controller to be the GOAT. I was just pointing out that the 2.2 Galore layout in Goldeneye was ahead of its time. Having two toggle sticks compared to one allowed you to run circles around your opponents

360 was great but the battery pack indenting into your fingers wasn’t ideal. Still Xbox one for me.

i think as we continue to improve on ergonomics and design, newer generations will outclass older ones.
so i propose this....not the GOAT, but perhaps the earliest precursor to the current common design

the PS5 controller is amazing. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are extremely satisfying
I flip my buttons to use the top L and R as my triggers. I find it more comfortable.

I love the PS4 and PS5 controllers but it's about damn time for Sony to finally swap the left stick with the dpad like the XB controller.

Tell me you never played Street Fighter 2 with that controller without telling me you never played SF2 with that controller.

SNES controller is the GOAT for that game, especially champion edition

PS4. I have not had a chance to play PS5 yet.
Old School favorite was the NES Advantage but that’s probably just the nostalgia talking.

I've had a PS3 and PS4. Could never get used to the symmetrical sticks. Never got really comfortable with the bumpers/triggers either. The PS3 controller was BARELY different from the PS1 dual shock--almost like they came from the same mold. They finally refined/softened the design for PS4 and it was much better.
Xbox 360/one/series have all been pretty close to each other and in my opinion the best. Just feels right in the hand. Agree with all that the 360 felt "better made." MS would probably tell you that "lighter is better" for ergonomics but I'm sure cost plays a factor too.
As much as I want a Switch I'll never get used to the completely reversed (from xbox) abxy ordering. Yes, I'm sure Nintendo was first to market with theirs, still it's "reverse" from what I got used to with xbox.

you are correct, i was an snes SF2 guy. i also adopted a 6 button off brand for genesis. like i said not the GOAT but you can easily see from an ergonomic stand point how it influenced design to this day. way more than NES or SNES

Huh? SNES set the standard with the shoulder buttons and 4 face buttons.

Xbox 360 for me... But I actually liked the replacement controller for the OG xbox.. Yeah the black and white buttons instead of LB/RB kinda sucked. But it was such an upgrade over the OG xbox controller I loved it

This is an interesting question.
Many would tout the wavebird for gamecube as one of the greatest controllers ever. I like the wavebird but I also liked th n64 controller for what it was.
Nintendo controllers never fit the mold of "traditional gaming" they fit the need of Nintendo and they do a stellar job.
I always liked the DualShock 2 but when xbox released the "mini" version of the xbox controller I recognized it was a better controller. The DualShock 3 was lackluster.
The dual shock 4 was an amazing upgrade and far more comfy for the hand. But then xbox released their elite controller and that was cream of the crop.
The dual sense controller for ps5 is one of my favorite controllers and I love the haptic feedback, but I had to open it up and mod it to add paddles on the back... Sony should have had paddles on it out off the box.
1: Xbox elite with paddles
2: Dualsense
3: Xbox Mini Controller
4: DualShock 4
5: Wavebird/gamecube
6: DualShock 2-3
7: n64
8: everything else

I think I'd go with the XB1 controller since it's the GOAT controller for FPS (obviously nothing beats mouse and keyboard but I'm talking controllers only) and the dpad is much better than the 360 controller (the one thing I disliked about that one). Which makes it friendly for playing playing old games via emulation.
And I guess I want a Saturn controller too since it's the GOAT for Capcom fighting games.

Mentioned early and often but the Duke is by far my favorite, I bought a couple of extras when the smaller one came out but my Duke still works perfectly. I got one of the Hyperkin copies for the newer systems but it doesn't have the exact same action and it bugs me.
Suprised nobody has mentioned the high quality aftermarket controllers. The Scuf Instinct is incredible, I haven't had a chance to try and Instinct pro yet.
My biggest issue is not with the controller themselves but the software is the games that don't support legacy controller layouts. It is so hardwired into my brain I am never as good with any other layout in a FPS.
