Seriously. Is there anyway to produce better levels than say, Tick Tock Clock?

It's a good game, but it's not the GOAT. OoT and FF VII are both better games.

It was revolutionary but not the best game of all time; it wasn't the best game on the 64.

I would rank it up there. It's hard to emulate experiencing exploring a 3D world like that for the first time.

It may not be GOAT, but in terms of what it did for that series, even that genre, was mindblowing and groundbreaking. From a side scroller to a immersive 3D world, it's impact was enormous. OoT had the same affect on the Zelda series. Walking into a fully realized 3D Hyrule Field was something most gamers will never forget.

I would say no because most 3D Mario games released since have improved upon the formula. It is a very good game that probably ranks as the greatest of all time in the hearts of a lot of people, but it's not timeless in the same way that Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros are.

I will say though that it was amazing for its day. I never owned an N64, but there was nothing like it when it came out.

within context of the time, circumstances and available technology? it's either the first or second greatest. I think ocarina is #1

if I don't consider all of those things and just treat them as equals...there are better games, there are better Mario games (galaxy)...but you still cannot find 10 better games

It is the most revolutionary and probably one of the top 3 most important games of all time.

It's in the Top 5 for greatest, which is good enough. There is enough to say yes, and there is also enough about the other 4 to say yes for them as well.

Goldeneye for me and it's not even close. Killed hours with my best friend on that game.

I think it is impossible to dismiss the fact that it was essentially the first real 3d game on a console, that everything about the franchise had been established in 2d presenting a whole bunch of challenges just in terms of "what is 3d Mario", etc., etc., etc.

I agree with you, it's top 10 (you say 5, same general sentiment) even judged without context or considerations. it nails everything, when you place it in context, the awesomeness is just overwhelming.

Goldeneye hasn't aged as well because unlike Mario it's a game that aims for hyper realism and is not very sophisticated related to other FPSs released today.

Mario 64 is a cartoon and the gameplay is maxed out on sophistication. Context sensitive design is the bees knees

I still enjoy Mario 64. I loved goldeneye. I bought it when released and played it for years with friends, but playing it today, it kind of sucks

Goldeneye is terrible, it was only the muliplayer that made this game enjoyable.

It was pretty solid as one of the first games to really explore a semi-sandbox style world and 3 dimensional space. A remastered version of that game with better controls and graphics would have been great.

Donkey Kong and Banjo Kazooie (1 & 2) were better games.

there are like 20 single player missions. beating them on hard was one thing, doing it before a time limit is reached? damn, that game WAS awesome. there's no shooter at that time that even compares to it. it sucks now, but let's not get carried away.

the single player campaign was fun to play with a friend. your turn, my turn type deal. loved that game.
