It looks like 2 subscriptions to play old school and Zelda games.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members playing on Nintendo Switch 2 will soon gain access to upgrade packs for both the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom games, allowing them to enjoy the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of these games at no additional cost. Note: you must have either The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch to use the respective upgrade pack.

Yeah this won’t be a Wii-U flop but it’s not going to hit switch 1 numbers.
Price, no Covid and the economy will play a factor in this. I see some families skipping because of the hike to game prices.

Parents will buy this as Santa with the camera, games, the works. It is superb marketing.
6 year olds will be getting a $90 game. It is what it is.
Family will load up Nintendo gift cards for the kids.
I am hooked on Zelda type games. I bitch every time a newer system comes out and the prices shock me every time- but this one takes the cake.

Every time I run out of steam in BOTW/TOTk, I get a little further into Age of Calamity and the lore connection pulls me back in to chase down another dozen Korok seeds or explore a few more dead zones on the map.
I LOLed at the Zelda Tracks app helping you find any undiscovered shrines, though. I chased down all those bitches before I went to finish both games.
(Still need to do the BOTW expansion content, though. That sword trial is a beast).

The Switch is arguably one of the most successful platforms in VG history. The Switch 2 is much more than an iterative improvement.

This.
And with the success of the movie and the theme parks, Nintendo is sitting on a lot of cultural recognition. The Switch 2 probably won't sell as much as the Switch, but it will be a success.

I think adoption of the system will happen but it will be somewhat gradual.
I’m not seeing killer apps yet past Mario Kart, especially if stuff like the new Pokemon are releasing on both platforms. But families will upgrade whenever the old Switch gives up the ghost because the difference in cost between the previous version and new is somewhat incremental.

No one said that about the Wii-U, everyone saw it as a dud on launch.
Completely different situations.
1. The Wii was a monster success early, but the severe limitations of the hardware at the time, along with the changing of video games to a more mature focused market and the substantial upgrades and timing of all the releases were a huge problem.
2. The Wii U was named poorly, presented poorly and did not really carry the Wii forward in the way that might have seemed natural (but it obviously was the precursor to the Switch). And the screen system nature of it really limited multiplayer and a bunch of other items, etc.
3. Nintendo was downgraded to "kiddie" at that point, and most third party games that could not come to the system became huge cultural icons - Halo, etc. and those drove the market forward.
It's completely different now. Tech allows for much better ubiquity across all devices, see Fortnite. Nintendo has seemingly learned from it's mistakes. The Switch dominated the space.
And it's now not REALLY seen as an Xbox/PS competitor. It took almost 2 decades for that to really sink in, but Nintendo is not trying to be a "Video Game" console in the current iteration of what that means. They can do some of that, and will, but the core focus is not mature, violence and sports simulations. I'd honestly say the market has shifted from that as well in general.
Being released off the Sony/MS cycle will pay dividends. They proved the mobile nature can be hit. And they've softened on a lot of their old weird stances like chat/friends/etc.
They are a different company today than they were with the Wii U.

So there's an entire stable of first-party properties that don't have any update yet: (upgrade versions of previous releases notwithstanding)
Mario
Zelda
Splatoon
Animal Crossing
Fire Emblem
Luigi's Mansion
Starfox

I don't know anyone who played BOTW on the WiiU. Everybody that was into it played it on the Switch.

Aren't you a big RPG player?
If I like Trials of Mana, DQ, DQ Builders, Zelda, all of the Tales on switch, Ni No Kuni, DQ11...
What games could I like? Is pokemon good, Mario RPG? Y's went weird. How about Legand of heros? fire emblem?

Games weren’t portable from the WiiU to the Switch. You can buy a Switch game and play it on the Switch 2, especially a first party game that would be extensively tested.
The idea isn’t someone buying the old gen hardware and software, it’s someone saying “I’ll just buy the game now and get the new hardware later.”
The WiiU also wasn’t established at all while the Switch is well established.

But the WiiU was at the end of its lifecycle when BOTW came out as a Switch launch title.

Have you gotten into the Metroidvania genre at all?
Hollow Knight has some brutal platforming sections, but it's an RPG at heart. So are the Gameboy Advance Castlevania titles that are in the Castlevania Collection (Aria of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, etc).
Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps are a great pair, too.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has deep RPG roots and is a game from the past 5 years by the guy who practically invented the Metroidvania genre by virtue of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Yoku's Island Express is something I've been playing lately, and if you told me "it's a pinball Metroidvania" I'd assume you were high.
Dead Cells is fantastic, and so is Hades, Death's Door & Ender Lillies.
You can pick up FFi-VI in a collection, too. If you like Dragon Quest, you owe it to yourself to play through the early FF titles.

whenever the old Switch gives up the ghost
I have a vested interest in moving to the S2 as soon as I can because my wifi chip in my G1 Switch is spotty at best. I'm constantly getting disconnected during Luigi's Mansion 3 & Splatoon 3.

I signed up for pre-order notification on Nintendo, Gamestop, and Bestbuy. I'd probably rather the Nintendo route but I don't have a lot of faith in it actually arriving ON launch day. Even then it would be late in the day based on when UPS normally gets to my house. I'd rather pick up in a store bright and early.

Best Buy is sticking to their guns with the April 9 preorder date.

I can't recommend these games enough. Both the GB Advance and DS collections are well worth playing.
