You should NEVER follow someone who likes his phone after they have root..
just like you should never buy my phone, because I hated it before root.

HTC has the "developer" market, I wouldn't recommend a "high end" HTC to just anyone.. I did however recommend the Incredible 2, to my brother and he absolutely loves it. Good battery life, good support and no problems in 6 months.

I don't think he had rooted it when I bought mine.

as the market stands right now - I think you should get an Incredible 2.

Not sure where you heard HTC phones were crap. You may want to look around for more opinions.

that's 200 bucks.
the I.T. guy i work with said htc wasn't good when they first started. their phones were made of plastic. he did mention, though, when the incredible came out, that's when they stepped their game up.

The Thunderbolt gave HTC a black eye.. it was the first LTE phone for Verizon, was the first time Verizon was messing with Sim Cards, and HTC wanted to release the phone "first" no matter what, and ended up releasing an unfinished product.. ever since the release of the Thunderbolt they have kinda had a black eye with verizon customers.
I actually currently have the Thunderbolt and love it - but I had to root it in order to get away from the unfinished crap.

I'm going to root mine this weekend. I don't have any complaints other than battery management.

Cool! Just make sure to follow the directions 100% of the way, and check everything every step of the way as well.
I use (androidforums) to follow, they are a branch of xda. Once you get root, if you want to try out some custom roms - I find the BAMF is the best for me, you might want to try them out as well.

Ok - 1) if you want a "good" phone you are going to have to spend a little bit of money bud.. at $200 it's still cheaper than the iPhone, and you get a lot more options with Android in my opinion.
2) The release cycle for Android devices is sporadic, especially since they are trying to make inroads in the Tablet market right now, the only phone I know of coming out "soon" is the Moto Bionic, and it's going to be pretty expensive - like the Thunderbolt.
