I liked the challenge of running the Gwent gauntlet at the party while on a date with the medic chick

If one game has a more involved gearing/progression mechanic, that's a point in favor of that game.
"more involved" may mean better for you, but that's not the case for many people. I don't want to manage a massive inventory filled with shite. if you like that, that's fine, but lots of people don't.
quote:
From a game design standpoint, Witcher 3 offers more than both TLoU and BB. It is a much more complete and well-rounded experience.
so "offers more" = better game? are games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Kingdom Come, etc better as well? they have lots of stuff to do too.
quote:
Like I said before, they're great games, but they aren't Witcher 3 good.
they're all within a couple points of each other on metacritic, they are 100% on the same level.
we're just gonna have to agree to disagree, it's purely subjective at this point. you like having lots of shite to do and manage, and I like tight and focused experiences. let's just leave it at that.

trust me. do it. Gwent is a lot of fun. you may not think so at first , but then you snow-frick someone's entire battle horned siege line late in round 3 and win some amazing card and realize how much fun it is

Agreed. I got into gwent late in my first playthrough but it’s addicting as shite.

quote:The presentation in Elder Scrolls/Fallout is nowhere near that of Witcher 3, but you're on the right track with the gameplay elements. It's also a good example of what separates great games and generational bests, IMO. Witcher 3 was able to give the depth and freedom of an Elder Scrolls/Fallout while not sacrificing things like cutscenes, voice acting, plot development, etc. That's the bulk of my point. You are absolutely correct in terms of enjoyment being subjective. When I speak in terms of "Greatest game of X", I almost always approach it from the perspective of what game delivered the most well-executed content at a high quality. Plus I fricking LOVE little shite like Geralt's beard growing. Stuff like that in games makes me cream my damn pants. I got a mod for Skyrim specifically just to add footprints in the snow.
so "offers more" = better game? are games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Kingdom Come, etc better as well? they have lots of stuff to do too.
I realize the way I type is very matter of fact and may come off as rather aggressive when stating a side. I need to work on that.

It's def in my personal top 3 of the past generation and a perfectly valid pick for best of this generation.

I'm utterly awful with this. you are fine
good talk, just different sides of the aisle on this one. Witcher is still an easy 5/5 game for me and is 100% in the discussion for generational supremacy.

If by "generation" we mean console eras, TLOU is technically last generation isn't it? It was a PS3 game, granted late PS3 but still.
It's a pretty arbitrary distinction though, especially with PC games which may or may not be on consoles.
I still think it's a useful way to divide games up though for discussion and categorization.

i think people always include it since it was so late in the PS3 cycle.

If Witcher 3 was a Sony exclusive he wouldn't even try to debate this.
has an anti-open world hard-on.

There is no single greatest game of any generation. There has to be single AND a multi player greatest.
Single player: I guess it could be Witcher 3
Multiplayer: Not really sure about greatest but Fortnite has been the most popular but it's arse right now. I don't remember a COD being good in this gen. PUBG was good. Apex is dying due to content. Destiny was riddled with issues about content.

Yeah, padding and unnecessary filler aren’t for me. I prefer meaningful engagement, not collecting 20 cactuses and 15 squirrel tails to craft a new pouch. “Linear” was a slur for years (and apparently still is to you) but people are starting to come around and realize how bland and generic most open world affairs are
Hub-based exploration like in God of War, Metro, and Deus Ex are the way to go

quote:I JUST had a conversation with a buddy of mine about this and completely agree. There is such a thing as too open. Skyrim, for all of the freedom it gave modders and players in general, had very bland storytelling because of the nature of the game.

I think the Zelda games outside of BotW are the perfect balance of "open world" and linear story progression. Yes, even BotW gets knocked for this. I love BotW but over time I realized how much the story of Link's adventure suffered due to restrictions in writing and storytelling due to its "do anything whenever" design. I prefer the design of Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.
