all great stuff. more systems because the game is much grander in scale and because of the world it's set in.
Witcher 3 being a deeper game.

I didn't care for the combat in W3.

but we're not really comparing like games. You're comparing an epic, narrative-driven fantasy RPG to an action RPG and a post-apocalyptic shooter
A more apt comparison would be comparing Witcher to Elder Scrolls or something. The claims of higher depth hold more weight because there are similar systems in place. I'm not gonna say LoU has better shooting than Witcher
I judge games based on how they succeed at what they set out to do. BB has a sublime combat system and world, while LoU has incredible pacing, characterization, and execution of narrative. As good as Witcher was, the main story was inferior to the first 2 games' (save for a few epic/cinematic moments) and was grossly outclassed by the DLC.

would've much preferred if they used their resources to craft a bigger main quest with more stuff like the Bloody Baron as opposed to 100 monster dens and 218 buried treasures in Skellige.
Exactly why I cannot get myself to play it. I know things are optional but It takes away from games for me.

If Witcher 3 was a Sony exclusive he wouldn't even try to debate this.
This is just not true.

my issue with it is that it takes away tons of resources from working on more important things. the first 2 games had such a mature, handcrafted feel to their quests and stories, whereas 3 just felt more....casual, I guess. they abandoned the complex political and personal stories and went for a more generic Chosen One narrative.
you have to finish it and play the DLC though. Hearts of Stone has some of the best content in the entire series

I have all the DLC paid for but never played. One day I will get back to it I am sure.

quote:While I agree mostly the ending is on rails but theres just so much flexibility in the way they tell this story. Did you know you can send Kiera Metz back to Kaer Morhen and she will also help fight the Hunt. You don't have to do things in the order you're expected to and they've programed so many dialog and world event changes if you haven't done quest before. Theres a guy on youtube Xleaks or something that does videos of all the things that change and its impressive.
Most of Witcher's choices don't really matter either, save for 4-5 story choices that have minor changes on the world (like who rules Skellige) + the ending choices. Witcher 1 and 2 choices felt much more impactful.
Did you know you can beat the Hearts of Stone expansion in its entirety and as an optional quest reward he will tell you all the best decisions to get the best ending to the base game campaign? (If you haven't finished the base game when you beat hearts of stone)
I am amazed by how much they thought out all the details of the game.
Oh and the base game and blood and wine both have at least 4 possible endings a piece. Thats damn impressive. (I'm pretty sure its more)

Heart of Stone is GOAT DLC to me
the final boss on death march fricked me up Freide style.
well I guess the penultimate boss, the dlc namesake. I didn't get the real "god" ending as I am greedy

oh god it's so good. great tragic character in Olgierd, wonderful and complex villain in Gaunter. so well-done and well-written

Hearts of stone was my favorite expansion of the two. The entire mission to get the Rose.. that was a trip.
Olgierd was an amazing character, even the times I was supposed to hate him I still liked him.
The little touches like the children sitting outside signing a song about Master Mirror before you meet him at the cross roads... just fantastic and incredibly creepy. I don't think you get this option during the night hours though.

I'm doing a second run through right now on the hard difficulty. Its still not that hard though. If I was gonna compare it to another game it wouldn't be Bloodborne or Skyrim or some fantasy game, it would be the first RDR. There's a huge world to explore with a bunch of side missions and the world actually feels alive and like a real place. Its some of the best world building I've ever seen in not just a game but movies and series too.
A few minor gripes though. There aren't enough blacksmiths. I'm one of those people that likes to pick up everything. All those shitty weapons get heavy and I like to sell them to blacksmiths as they give you the most money for them. The few blacksmiths they have only have a small amount of cash and it takes them a long time to restock. There needs to be more, or at least give them infinite cash to buy your stuff.
Another issue no one seems to talk about is how loose the controls are. Its hard to slowly walk up to something close by to loot it or talk to a person because Geralt keeps running all over the place. Sometimes he even walks on his own without me touching anything. I know its not my controller because this doesn't happen in other games. Its really frustrating.
There's too many gwent related trophies. I don't care about gwent enough to figure out how to play it. I'm missing out on a bunch of trophies because of it. There's some other stupid trophies too.

I would advise to stop picking up garbage and learn to play Gwent

quote:We're comparing games. I'm not interested in the shortcomings of genre choice or what devs do and don't do. That's a choice you make when you pick what game you're developing. We're talking about the greatest games of this generation, genre notwithstanding. It doesn't matter if a game "requires" certain mechanics or not. If one game has a more involved gearing/progression mechanic, that's a point in favor of that game. It's still time and effort put into something a game like Bloodborne didn't even have to worry about.
Of course Joel isn't going to have mutagens and potions and shite. Of course Bloodborne isn't going to have heavy story elements with choices. That's not what FromSoft does.
From a game design standpoint, Witcher 3 offers more than both TLoU and BB. It is a much more complete and well-rounded experience. Whereas TLoU and BB are more niche.
TLoU cashed in on the zombie craze and popularity of The Walking Dead by making a (very good) cinematic thriller with sneak away from/kill the Clicker sections in-between.
Bloodborne trailed the popularity of the Souls series by piggybacking that idea with slight changes. Like I said before, they're great games, but they aren't Witcher 3 good.

It only cost me once in the regular game as its only required again to do the High Stakes Novigrad side quest.
