Sounds like playing Fallout, but that's a good thing.

Hey guys, just started last night. I'm trying to avoid looking anything up on this game but I can't figure out how to get cold resist. I saw in the old man's diary something about spicy peppers and seafood. Is that the trick? Cooking something?
Thanks
Thanks

that is one way, yes.
also, carrying a lit torch provides cold resist. thats what I did to get to the shrine on the great plateau.

never played fallout, but it never pulls you and in only one instance after leaving the plateau do the designers guide you but you won't notice it as it is happening
there's a reason most everyone beat the same divine beast first. they point you to a village to start but I ignored it and it was hours before I went there and it wasn't any big thing so much as upgrading your slate and giving you the divine beast quests...but I beat a divine beast before doing that and it was so satisfying because I did not know what I stumbled upon.

but this game works very realistically too. if you were out in the wild and you were cold, what would you do to warm up?
there is never one way to tackle something in this game.

when you do play this, turn off the HUD. use the map menu when you need the map. it's complete immersion this way and makes exploring fun because your eyes are on the world and not the map.

40 hours? Did you get a review copy or something
24x4 = 96
Half of that is is 48. So essentially, you're telling me that you spent on average about 10+ hours a day since the 3rd?

best advice in this thread. really makes a great game even better.

Thanks jefforize. Again, just starting out, but I tried running out up there with a lit boko club and it burned out. Where would I find a torch?
Posted on 3/8/17 at 9:36 am to txpurpleandgold
firewood
And if you don't see it around, you can make it the same way you would in real life.
God dammit I love this game

if you went up from the same place I did.. you'll find a big tree with a bunch of enemies guarding it. around that tree will be spicy peppers, a torch, and a lit bonfire.
and yea , chopping down a tree should get you a korok leaf or tree branch.

First Zelda game so the basic rundown here is you need to find ways to brace the elements and somewhere in that harsh environment or very close to it is clothing suited for that environment
Don't be afraid to venture in with 10 minutes of effect in this game. You're not going to be playing beat the clock the whole game or that often

I have wood but when I lit it it just made a campfire. I'm sure I'll figure it out but it just seems like I'm missing something

yeah, think of those as little safe points along the way so you can look around, chart your course and not have to worry about freezing to death
I forget this is your first Zelda game so a lot of the conventions we just take for granted or pick up really quickly are going to be obstacles for you and sometimes that will make it more awesome for you and other times frustrating.

if you're someone who is stressed out by timers, there are only a couple of regions of the map that will require you to do that and like I said, if you have 10 minutes spread across how ever many elixirs, you have enough to give it a go.
also, even though it is a ridiculous fantasy games with talking rock creatures and bird people, think about things realistically.
if it's raining you can't climb because it is slippery, but it masks the sounds of your footsteps. if you're wearing a bunch of metal and you see lightning...wear something else. if you're around lava and you have wooden weapons, guess what happens if you don't equip something else?
this game is really whatever pace you want so don't feel like you have to rush to the end, you can take as long as you want to figure out even little things.

I was trying to get to a tower and then climb it (central tower) with a lightning storm hitting all around me and guardians just wearing me out. I just let the storm pass.
Got a few more hours in last night. Did some more stuff around dueling peaks that I missed on the first pass (like 4 shrines). Did a few memories.

you need an actual item called "torch". not a bundle of wood which starts a campfire as you've learned.
or just complete the quest the old man in the forest chopping lumber gives.

dueling peaks
you get so used to searching off in the distance from these vantage points when you should be looking down
Posted on 3/8/17 at 10:09 am to jefforize
did you get the cold weather clothing at the peak next to the one where the shrine is located?
that was fun. I had a few minutes of status effect left and could've just headed down, but said awe frick it what's on that peak over there and that was awesome. also the view is spectacular
