Offworld Trading Company may be a different idea that accomplishes what you are looking for.

As I mentioned - robotic empires are the easiest to play with as long as you choose gestalt consciousness (limited habitability penalties, no consumer goods or food upkeep, your main leader is immortal) - the DLCs biggest boon is the ascension paths for traditions. Maybe it’s not an absolute must if you are still getting into the game, but it’s my favorite dlc

Ahh. Makes sense, thanks.

Josh, have you tried a Venice playthrough on Civ?

Multiple, enjoyed them quite a bit. A bit too easy for a diplo victory, viable for a science victory outside of deity. Actually made it most of the way through a challenge game in which I was attempting a conquest victory, but I wasn't allowed to capture any cities; the city states I had suz over had to actually make the capture. Surprisingly viable, though also very frustrating

One city challenges aren't awful in 5. They are more frustrating in 6 due to a combination of the game encouraging wide play and the "buildings on the actual map" paradigm. I actually enjoyed the adjacency bonus puzzle of 6, but the limit of three workable hexes, even if you expand out to five, was annoying. Did have a surprisingly strong and fun single city science game with Yongle, though.

I have never heard this description before today.

It's ubiquitous in Civ fandom, but I honestly have no idea if it's strategy/4x wide, which is why I tried to explain it as best I could

But yeah, "wide" (more cities, less developed) vs "tall" (fewer cities, more developed) is the focus of a lot of Civ discussion, both between games (Civ5 favors taller play while Civ6 favors wider play) as well as between civilizations in each game.

I don't think I've played any civilization game longer than 5 minutes since whatever was available on the OG PlayStation

V and VI are both really solid, though they play very differently. They also both frequently (like right now) go deeply on sale on Steam. I haven’t played VII, but it gets shite on pretty hard by the fandom.

EUIV (with some DLC)

Congrats, you can spend 1500 hours playing this until they launch EUV and a couple of DLCs.

Over 2k hours in Stellaris. I can't give any similar examples for complexity but its definitely easier to get the hang of than other grand strategy games like CK2 and X4 (highly recommend this one too). As stated you can play tall or wide.

If you want to try something similar but easier to get into, go with with Paradox's Star Trek: Infinite. It simplifies Stellaris and adds one of the three original travel mechanics plus a few concepts from other Paradox games. It does not have the replay value that Stellaris has but it is still worth the price in my opinion despite the steam reviews.

Stellaris was easier for me to pick up than EU4. I’ve tried EU4 and the WW2 one and just have no earthly idea what’s going on there

If you're talking about Hearts of Iron IV then I was exactly the same.
