I played it for a few minutes in Target this weekend, really looking forward to buying and playing through this one. My wife wanted a Switch for her birthday last month, and as someone who grew up in the 90s, I have been enjoying the hell out of this thing. I've gone through phases over the last 10-15 years of owning Playstations and Xbox but neither of those have gave me the nostalgia that playing games like Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda have over the last month. The only problem is my wife gets first dibs since it was her birthday gift, i'm having a hard time trying to keep myself from buying a second Switch

Even if they fall in a hole or get left behind they become a ghost that can be revived within 5 seconds without losing a life. The ghosts can control their movements so it keeps the kids on task of keep up with the leader. You have no idea how much more effective it is to be able to show your kid how to navigate a hazard then try to explain it to them. I tried showing mine SMW and they had no idea wtf was going on.

Some things I learned playing with my young one:
If you play as Yoshi, your kid can jump on your back so you can do the jumps as needed. They can still throw fireballs and such from that position.
Watch for who has the crown as the screen will follow that character, and you can pull the other characters to death with ease on accident.
As mentioned, the lack of lives lost unless you both die is great. Free trial and error.
Most importantly, you absolutely can eat a shell and spit it at your teammates to kill them with no real repercussions due to the last point. Allegedly.

I did the same thing. I didn't realize how vital holding the run button is. It really through my daughter off and she got frustrated before we could get going.

One of my main gripes. I also don’t like how a player “dies” if they get left behind. On Mario Deluxe they just end up in a bubble floating around until you pop them. On this one you’re a ghost and have 5 seconds to get popped by the other player or you lose a life.

In wonder with yoshis flutter jump the little ones don't have to master holding the run button right away.

Two more things I learned when playing with my nephew:
1. Yoshi can also eat/spit out powerups instead of just losing them on contact.
2. If you get stuck, you can hold L+R at the same time to turn into a ghost as if you died so you can float to where the other player is and revive yourself.

Just as I hoped, my daughter loved the game. It's great because I can enjoy the game while she is also running around with me in it. My only issue is who has the "Crown" is not changeable with some sort of toggle. It seems whoever earned the last seed has the crown. That's annoying when my kid doesn't understand the game yet and doesn't know to continue moving to the right. So, I end up on the right side of the screen until she follows, and I have to go get the next seed to get the crown back on my head.

I thought the leader went to whoever finished the stage higher on the flag pole. That can be a little frustrating when the little ones get the leader, but they're going to have to learn sooner or later, and if you're it 90% of the time they will learn quickly

I have to keep reminding myself not to give a shite if we get all the seeds or do it in a timely manner. That is for when I am playing by myself. You're right that having her with the crown will force her to learn quicker.
I am absolutely loving the game. Playing these Mario games as an adult with children makes me appreciate all the cute aspects of it. My only worry now is that I am progressing too quickly, and the game will be over soon. I got too used to TOTK where I played for months and still had to force myself to progress the story.

Just finished up, and got all of the checkmarks on each of the levels. Just wish the game was longer.
Spent most of the morning helping other people beat the final badge challenge. Honestly have no idea how anyone can beat that level without help from other people.
