Stellaris (2016)

Picked this game up for $10 from the Steam Sale. I played crusader kings 3 so i have a basic understanding of Paradox grand strategy games, and knew what i was getting into with the learning curve.
I am getting my arse kicked. This game is very challenging.
1st try, made it about 80 years, realized i was woefully under teched. But it was my first game so that was to be expected
2nd try, thought i was doing good, until a "Super AI" Militant Xenophobe i spawned next to decided its 40k military was better than my 1k military and just rolled over me.
3rd try, i disable the Super AI shite. Things are going well, a relatively even rival declares war on me. Ok cool, here we go, should be an even battle and i have upgraded Corvettes and am prepared...wait.. why is the empire on the other side of me attacking at the same time as my rival?
So.. two empires on opposite sides of my empire conspired together to take me out huh. Ok, ya got me
4th world.. in progress. Seems i am surrounded by Hostiles again so i know how this will go unless i do something different
Do i just need to tech up my fleet ASAP and attack everyone i can before the Senate is formed? Waiting around trying to be diplomatic is getting my arse kicked.
Anyone ever win a game of Stellaris and want to share how? Really fun game.

Really depends on how your empire is initially built.
Your ethics and origin play a huge role in everything going forward.
Some origins are trickier to take advantage of whereas some are more passive that just give you bonuses out the gate.
As for ethics, if you are egalitarian militarist and you spawn next to an authoritarian spiritualist, chances are one of you is going to have to die
When you're initially spreading your borders, emphasize finding chokepoints so if a war does break out, you're not having to deal with 5 different angles of approach. Bastions (starbases with gun batteries/hangar bays and the like) with a fleet on top is extremely hard to take down in the early to mid stages of the game.
If you know an enemy is likely going to try killing you, trying to take them out first before they can get bastions up is recommended.
Hope all that helps, and glad to hear you're enjoying the game

Paradox games suck ngl
I wish games were still fun or I could take a pill that would make me forget new Vegas and Skyrim and play them on repeat

good tips, thanks.
Im not sure if i like, or hate, the fact that next research alternatives are randomly generated when presented.
think im gonna tell these space amoebas to frick off with my nuclear missiles and coil guns when i return later.

they are frustrating for sure. battles being won "on a spreadsheet" isnt the ideal, but, its better than RTS for me at my boomer age.

How so?
Paradox games usually are bit much for me, but I did have a lot of fun with Stellaris. I'm not great at it, but usually have done very well.

Choke points and starbases were super key the last time I played. I would turtle up, let my enemy waste a few waves then break out and smash their entire civilization. It also helped that I had a fantastic start when I only had two ways into my main area for a large part of the early game. I always try to start off as the United Federation of Planets and would end up turning into the Empire of Man.

Hearts of Iron 4 is awesome. Obviously to get much out of any Paradox game, you will want to get the DLCs they release, but that one is so much fun to me because of all the Alt-history paths and formable nations you can take through focus trees/decisions. Gotta love trying to re-form the Austro-Hungarian Empire or have a German Civil war to bring back the Kaiser in 1936

Fun game until the arse-raping begins.
Surviving Mars is a more low key and enjoyable Paradox game IMO.

made it to the midgame, about 115 years in. Have 2nd highest victory score, so things are going well. Im out teched by the #1 empire, so i need to upgrade my research #s still.
i have Cruisers with Amoeba strike craft and regenerative hull tissue that i am anxious to utilize. Really want to start a war to continue expanding and gobble up some lesser empires, but have to carefully consider the consequences.

This game is some Bs but pretty fun.
My longest effort ended around 2430 due to Praetorian scourge. Wtf is this
5th try ends early due to over expanding too close to evangelizing zealots. Woops
6th try… I have evangelizing zealots on both sides. One almost instantly declares war but I was ready for it and won the war. The other empire stations their troops on my other border but thankfully I moved the fleets over in time and had starbase defense upgrades kick in. So they’ve held off but will surely declare war soon
Pinned in by two war hungry maniacs. Pretty fun. To be continued

I play on the PS4 but I liked it better with the sphere of influence setting vs. The updated station to station expansion. I wish there was a toggle that I could change it back. Half the fun for me before was trying to make my civilization so awesome everyone wanted to join me
