Started Fallout 3 - I have questions

Ammo scarcity? It seems like I'm running out of ammo a lot.
Enemy levels - as I'm doing a quest, I've ran into a few enemies I can't come close to killing. Do you run into this often?
It feels like there's not enough to level you up early on, but I'm pushing through it. What's some tips on speeding up the leveling?
About 7 hours in, and I really like the karma concept and the open world. Pretty dark and twisted, fits my sense of humor.

1) Ammo is scarce, but that's part of the fun. Eventually, you'll be rolling in ammo. Just save up and scavenge every place you can. It adds up.
2) This is normal. There are some people/creatures who will whip your arse in the beginning if you confront them. You've gotta be strategic when you fight, or when/where you travel for that matter. The more you level, the better you'll be at fighting, but so will the enemies.
3) I always leveled my bartering a good deal and guns (and energy weapons. Comes in handy later). You'll spend hours trading for supplies and bulking up your inventory. Pick about two perks that you don't think you'll use. For example, I never leveled up my melee or unarmed. It allows you to beef up the other areas.
Also, pay attention to which perks you pick. Make sure they benefit you in the long run.
Hope this helps.

Pretty much hit it on the head...
I actually bought a copy of Fallout 3 last time I was at gamestop because I couldn't find my copy. Plan on starting a new save file in the next few days.

Oh how I miss when raiders were exciting to kill and I would be excited when they dropped 25 Caps
Then It moved up to loving getting those sexy power armors from the Enclave soldiers... Then I beat the game

i never used energy weapons and did fine. Conserve ammo, keep 4 weapons on you at all times and only use the weapon that is strong enough to kill the enemy. i.e. dont use a high powered rifle on a fly, or a dog.
The easiest way to conserve ammo is to sneak as close as possible and rifle a shot or two to the head, cover, and then shotgun the head when they come looking around the corners for you. it requires you being really close to enemies, but its one of the few times VATS was abused.
Use the swift learner perk, and the educated perk as early as possible. it makes the game much easier as you go on.

Learn to love the hunting rifle.

My hunting rifle was my go to until I got Lincoln's Repeater. I didn't need much else after that.

I can't fast travel to my next location because I haven't discovered it yet and it sucks. I think I've died 20 times trying to finish this quest.

Pick up that rifle and up your guns perks and skills and you'll be golden.

Also, don't feel like you have to shoot everything. I wasted a lot of ammo early in life until I realized I could holster my weapon and just kick those radroaches/non-fire-breathing ants/other smaller enemies. Or go at them in VATS with a baseball bat. Same effect - dead critter, no ammo waste, little harm to yourself.
There is definitely an early ammo crisis. However, you do eventually get over this unseen "hump" and should be fine after that. There's also a perk you can take that will make more ammo pop up... think it's called Scrounger. Also, seemed to me like there was more ammo available for small guns (basically, all non-energy weapons), so definitely use perks in that category as well.
As far as enemies, yup, you will run across some that will own you for a while. Just the way it is until you get stronger. If you see a giant dinosaur-looking creature on the horizon, do yourself a favor and run like hell away from it. Don't really want to play with Deathclaws for a while.
However, tip for them - make yourself a dart gun and cripple the legs.
Now, if anyone has a better tip than "spray and pray" between cover for Super Mutant Overlords, I'll gladly take it. Those guys are a mofo to bring down, don't care what level you are.

Do you have it for console or PC?

Then whatever you do, stay away from Downtown until you rank up some.

Go to Tenpenny Tower and blow up Megaton right at dusk/night and watch it from there on top. It lights up the sky and is awesome.

Save your mini nukes
Don't visit the mall either until you've leveled

I'm going to go against what the other guy said and tell you not to pick the swift learner perk. Since there is a level cap this perk is rather useless in the long run. You'll have no trouble getting to level 30 and the perk point is better spent on getting something else.

Keep playing. The first part of the game you are mostly just trying to make money and buy ammo, later on ammo is no longer a concern, neither is money.

Fallout 3 has enemy level at certain areas, for example, a certain area will have level 5 enemies. If you are level 2 there is no way you can get to that area, if you level up to level 7 -you can clear that area out easily. If you are dying a lot at one spot, You aren't leveled up enough to get to those places.

Don't rush through it. Take your time, stick with the main missions at first, you'll get there eventually.....and explore as much as you can. The reason I say there's no rush is because you have a level cap at 20. Once you reach level 20, there is no more leveling up. (Unless you have the game of the year edition, it's level 30)

You're barely into it. I put in over 125 hours....I totally agree, most RPGs are dungeons and dragons type games, this one is dark, with zombies, super mutants, nuclear weapons, and killer robots.
And if you plan on putting in lots and lots of time into this game - take the comprehension perk. Skill books give you +2, instead of +1. Doesn't sound like much, but after level 30 those skill books are the only way to add to your skill score.

Level 20 is the highest you can go.
I decided to run around once and do shite on my own and leave the quests to later. I realized it after I hit level 20.

Educated perk is great, swift learner perk is a total waste. I used that perk too when I first played, right after I used it I realized there is a level cap so I went back to an old save and used a different perk.
Try different missions if you keep dying at one.
