I bought a package when I first started playing this game back in December that gave me offee and some others. The rest comes from farming, doing my dailies and saving crystals (methods I picked up from kork early in this thread). I play about an hour every morning with my coffee and sometimes in the afternoon with a beer.
Daily shard harvest incorporated with dailies:
Asajji- 5 from squad arena shipments (400 credits a day from knocking out my 3 battles)
Talia- 5 or so from cantina battles (takes care of my 3 cantina battles)
Consular- 5 or so from light/dark battles (takes care of my 3/3 light dark battles and the 5 hard battles)
Osaka- 5 from cantina battle shipments (I sometimes drop 100 crystals here to get my credits for the shipments)
Lumi- 5 from GW (restart every day and usually get at least 400 credits sometimes 600 depending on how far I get. She should be farther along but I've had GW days where I can't get past the third fight)
Also open all my data cards every day and use my crystals to buy the chromium card once or twice a week. That's where I got Cade and aayla. The game really wants me to have them because I've gotten both of them a few times. I've tried to use them and keep them leveled up but because their shards are only available in the data cards, I don't mess with them too much. It's a shame because aayla is nice in a fight. I usually throw them, plo, anakin, and qgj at harder levels in the GW to take out a Sid so my starters can finish them off.
The only thing I do that probably doesn't make sense: I collect shards for plo as often as I can because he's one of my favorite characters from SWU and I'd love him at 7*. His shards are only available in one battle so I'm lucky if I get more than one a day.
ETA: now that asaj is 7*, I'm working on Han from recommendations here. Once Lumi is 7*, I'll start working on phasma. When Osaka hits 7*, I'll start on qgj.

I'll stick with my Han recommendation, because I still find him very useful as a sacrificial lamb against most arena teams. By the time he dies, the rest of my guys are so far ahead in turns that I've got it won. His downside is I'm starting to run into characters that clear buffs, so they wipe out his taunt and he's basically useless. I just avoid those teams.
He also holds his own in the other modes, though obviously you don't want him to die and miss the 3*.
All that said, just be sure he fits your style and team comp before investing in him too much.

Oh wow. I guess I was thrown off by your stars to level ratio, but that makes sense if you've been playing since December and focusing on those specific heroes.
I haven't been very lucky with my data cards. I got Grand Moff Tarkin and thats pretty much it besides a bunch of 1 star heroes.

Got stumped yet again about 3/4 through it.
I need anoth dark side character. My 5th is the emperor's guard and he's getting smoked in battles now. Asajj, talia, Cade, Vader, guard are my only high lvl (4* or more) dark side. I don't have a phasma or Sid. Any suggestions?

Geonesian Soldier. Do it. His shards drop like candy in cantina 1-A.

I must have bad luck with him. I have literally spent days of cantina energy on 1-a only to have a handful of his shards drop.

I got him up to 6 stars pretty easily, he can one shot a lot of different threats with his assist attack and his speed is very good so he goes early in the fight.

You can farm Sid pretty easy from shipments every day. Also, Boba Fett is pretty easy from cantina shipments and battles.
Stick to one character and go as far as you can and then start a new one.
