According to multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo’s next-gen console plans, the company is likely to release new hardware during the second half of 2024, to ensure that it has ample stock available on day one and to avoid the kind of shortages seen with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Although specific details on the console are being kept closely guarded, those VGC spoke to indicated that the next-gen console would be able to be used in portable mode, similar to the Nintendo Switch.
Two sources VGC spoke to suggested that the console could launch with an LCD screen, instead of the more premium OLED, in order to bring down costs, especially considering the increased storage needed for higher fidelity games. The current Switch comes with just 32GB of internal memory, while many current-gen PlayStation and Xbox games are over 100GB.
Like its predecessor, the new Nintendo console will also accept physical games via a cartridge slot, the sources said.
Other details, such as backwards compatibility support for Switch games (physical and digital), remains unclear. Nintendo has said it wants to convert as many of Switch’s 100m+ userbase as possible to its next system, although some third-party publishers are said to have expressed concern that legacy support for Switch games could negatively affect sales of next-gen titles.

Even though I don't use my switch nearly as much as my pc for obvious reasons, they'll get my money again

I think this is a sure bet. Documents and testimony from the MS/ABK merger made this seem very likely. Lots of "Switch and [REDACTED]" mentioned in reference to short term goals and plans.

This new system needs to be a "Switch 2" system with updated specs and backward compatibility. If they don't do that, Nintendo will be making a huge mistake. Especially if that also means we lose access to all of the virtual consoles that come with the Nintendo Online Expansion Pass.
I honestly don't care that the handheld screen might not be OLED. I care more about output to the TV.

or maybe they just make a normal console that can play a lot, if not all, of modern games

Anything less than that would be suicide.

Can't see it not being backwards compatible, considering the X86 with Xbox and Sony.

if microsoft wants it to run CoD, it better be beastly compared to the current Switch.

I'm imagining it being cloud-based.

I don't think there is a huge demand from Nintendo gamers to play CoD.

There isn't I wouldn't think. It would have to be the cloud, tho.
Switch 2 OTOH...

Nintendo seems to disagree with you. They jumped at the chance to enter into an agreement with Microsoft for Call of Duty.

This is more the actual case

If Nintendo agrees to that, I’d be shocked.
Is everyone’s store gonna be on every platform now?
Is Microsoft gonna allow NSO/PS+ on Xbox if Nintendo/Sony bend the knee?
No? There lies the problem…

Same.
Nintendo is notorious for tight control over their consoles going back to all the unlicensed games on the original Famicom and the rampant piracy on the Famicom Disk System.
They aren’t going to want to be beholden to running a third party “game pass” app from another platform.

Hopefully they make a real console that can handle something better than baby games for autists

Yeah I hope it’s just a Switch 2 with more juice and whatnot. Gonna suck if I can’t play my switch games on it
