The stealth worked fine except the immersion being broken by Ellie wandering around out the open while you are trying to keep from dying.
This...this is 100% true. What's hilarious to me is that there's a detailed Naughty Dog presentation for the Game Developer's Conference where they walk through their complicated method for determining Ellie's AI for following Joel. You can tell they put a ton of work into it and I feel like they would have been better off having Ellie simply shadow the player the entire time and hide behind you in cover, with the exception of combat, when you've already been discovered. During combat they could have had her teleport a bit when the player wouldn't notice, which is what Bioshock Infinite did.

Here's the video for anyone interested.

Regardless, I am in agreement with you on the room for variety. I enjoy "walking simulators" occasionally but I also like playing Tetris from time to time, which is about as raw a game as you can get. To each their own.

ETA: I could be wrong but I thought that's what he said. Playing the game knowing zero about what was coming was incredible. It ended and I went...wow. Not once did I think "I can't wait for the 2nd one."

same baw. regardless, looking forward to the new one.

the game was self-aware that it was a silly stupid action movie game

it was . which is fine

but lets not try to act like "clowns who don't like Uncharted just don't like story or cutscenes." i love story and cutscenes - they have to be good though.

I loved the lead into the ending with the doctors. You go through the massive building thinking "oh crap. What monster is about to pop up in this arena" since the whole walk is a giant battle ground, but nothing ever shows up. Very suspenseful.

He's stated many times he wants his games to be mindless button mashing fun. Add a story, you might as well be watching a movie.

So that rules out some of the greatest games of all time, or just this year for that matter.

Blatantly false. I don't actively dislike story in games. What I dislike is when the story is clearly the main focal point of the game, to the point where the gameplay suffers.

Good story should enhance the actual game, not replace it. Taking a mediocre game and slapping a good story on it doesn't make it a great game.

I also don't consider games without in your face stories as automatically mindless. If you're having to use strategy or reflexes or decision making in the gameplay, it's very engaging. Just because that doesn't involve an emotional journey or some shite doesn't make it mindless.

This doesn't describe The Last of Us, though. With the exception of the first few encounters, which I assume were dumbed down to introduce more novice players to the mechanics, the combat is solid and the stealth is fun, often incorporating interesting map designs that give you multiple options in how you attack or sneak past enemies.

There are a few missteps, of course, like the sniper section and a few too many "get Ellie on a raft" puzzles, but "mediocre" is unfair. I also think the "normal" difficulty should have been "hard" instead, but I understand that decision. The game just doesn't feel like "survival" at all on normal if you're even half way decent at it.

How did the story in TLOU make the gameplay suffer? What game at the time did this sort of gameplay better?

Soo you’re are saying a good story should enhance the game....but then you turn around and immediately say slapping a good story on the game doesn’t enhance the game.....

I meannn I like your effort. I really do.

I had got out of gaming for a while and this was my first game experience in a while and 1st on the ps4. It ruined me. That game was so awesome, I’ve been searching for something close to it and how much I enjoyed it but end up being disappointed every time. Can anyone help me with that? Any game suggestions that come close?

God of War (2018) is what immediately comes to mind. You don't need to have played the previous games to get into this one.

Agreed with God of War but the gameplay is very different.

For sure. I meant if he was looking for another game that blends gameplay and a well acted story together in a similar fashion to TLOU. Gameplay-wise, it's very focused on melee combat, though it's a slower, more deliberate style than the previous God of War games.

Another game in a similar vein would be Horizon Zero Dawn. It has some stealth, but that's not the focus. It's also an open world game, so the story can meander a lot more depending on what side quests you decide to pursue.

He could also check out the Bioshock series, specifically Bioshock Infinite, for a blend of story and gameplay where you have a companion character with you for most of the game, but it's a first person shooter. The whole Bioshock collection is on sale right now for PS4 for $14.99. LINK

Also, take a look at Naughty Dog's other series, Uncharted, or the 3 most recent Tomb Raider games from Eidos.

All of the above mix gameplay and storytelling to various degrees.

God of War is fantastic and I didn't play the previous games. My favorite of the year.

I was worried about this because I loved the fast paced attacking in the previous ones but I was happy with it. I also had just beat Dark Souls/Bloodbourne before it so I was fine with it.
