The concept behind it has always appealed to me, but I didn't try to get to know it better and the graphics were always a turn off. Bought it on PC a couple of years ago to give it a try, loaded in, didn't know what I was doing, died, and exited the game. Haven't touched it since.
Well I bought it on my xbox one a couple of days ago and holy hell I'm addicted. I did the tutorial and it kind of started to click about what all the fuss over it was. Then I watched stampylongnose's how to minecraft video series and it started to click more. Now I've loaded up a world in survival mode and all I can think about is what I'm gonna build or explore next. This xbone version seems to be more user friendly than the pc version, but it's got me wanting to load up my pc version again at some point to check it out because I realize you can do more on it.
tldr I now see why people love Minecraft.

also apparently I should be thankful the world that was generated for my survival mode has snow, desert, jungle, and temperate forest. guess some worlds can be generated without one of those.
currently trying to find a good place to to start building my permanent residence.

I used to have a server and played on it 24/7, but it got stale.
Have you gotten some good resource packs yet?

I'm afraid to go back to it at times because of how bad it can consume you

nah I wanted to start in just vanilla minecraft for my first play.
there's some texture packs like halo and mass effect that come with the xbone version I'll probably check out at some point. then there's all the texture packs available on pc I need to check out as well.

yea I wasn't expecting the consuming part. Thought I'd get 15 min of fun out of it and move on.

I really don't get the appeal, but maybe my experiences have just been similar to your first one, though I've played it a good bit.
Or maybe I just suck at building shite.

pretty much the same thing happened to me about a year ago and I still play it daily on my ps4. I have a crew that I play with...just wait till u find a few people your age that like to play and u start working together..you will have to pry yourself away at times..
As a long time gamer...to me this is one of the best games ever made.
I had the same experience as you. Then after watching my 5 and 6 year old daughters build amazing stuff on the pocket version.. I gave the ps4 one a shot and never looked back

When you get bored of vanilla and go to PC, download technic launcher and try tekkit lite or hexxit mod packs. Tekkit lite is a builder mod, I prefer it over tekkit because it has more of my favorite mods. Hexxit is a fun adventure style modpack with more castles/dungeons/exploring to it.
Sphax texture pack ftmfw.

Always though Minecraft was a game for younger kids, like 5-15, but one of my roommates friends was always playing it on Xbox 360 whenever I checked out my friends list so my roommate and I bought it and we literally spent an entire weekend playing (We were 22 and in college at the time). I haven't played it in awhile, and probably shouldn't because I won't put it down if I do.
It's surprisingly addictive, and I'm not a creative person whatsoever.

you will have to try new seeds, people create start up areas that are pretty cool and loaded with some minerals compared to others.
