just turned off . my son , who is 8 was the captain. he says dad someone is after us. i jump into action and say get us out of here. Pick up archor and we set sail immediately i'm telling him to get me into position so i can fire the cannon. He never got me into position they hit us twice with cannon fire but we are getting away so i'm like cool. I turn to look at the wide open spaces in front of us and when i do we immediately hit an island. My son screams abandon ship. I'm like but we cant live on this miserable island with no boat. So i immediately quit the game and give him a dirty look then laugh
I hate losing.

Select the Sloop ship. Select small crew. Invite your son. It is pretty simple

You can't play cooperatively on the same system. You you would both have to connect to the network via separate XBOX or PC.

Did this, both things, separate xboxs, didn't work

When the screen shows up that has your gamer tag and an empty slot for a crew member, push X. Then, you can select from your friends list (checks will appear next to the selected players) and push the menu button. Wait for your son to accept the invitation. Once his gamer tag shows up in the slot, push A to begin your game.

Are you able to join a friend that is in game or do you need to start it off from the beginning?
I have no friends so this may be a moot point.

Depends on how they start their game. If they select sail alone, then no. You'll have to start your own ship and invite them.
If they aren't sailing alone and have room on their ship, then yes you can join them.

After being matched up with inept crewmembers too many times I have started going solo which has led me to being a target for griefing. going solo should have its own ship option, a boat that is faster than galleons and sloops. Even with tacking and the galleons slow turn, they could still catch me.

I've had no problem running circles around Galleons when I'm in a sloop
Make sure your sails are properly aligned with the wind. Sloops are also supposed to be much faster into the wind than Galleons.
With the sloop, you if they are chasing you, you can always zig zag back and forth and get some shots on them to slow them down. They won't be able to get cannons around on you. If all else fails, grab a gunpowder barrel, board their ship and take it to the hull of their ship. Keep holding it if they are chasing you. If they kill you, it should damage it enough to blow it up, killing them, and sinking their ship.

Hmm I was going with the wind. I guess tacking back and forth upwind is a better strategy.

Yea the Galleon's will chase you down with the wind no problem. That is their advantage. They are useless going into the wind. Also, find some rocks you can go between. They'll almost have to go around and you'll be able to lose them.

Well I feel better about my strategy now
Not sure if we are friends on xbox but add Neszer
