Give me Assissin's Creed in present day Hong Kong. Let me climb some fricking skyscrapers, kill some chinamen and jump into a fricking wagon of hay from 1000 fricking feet up.

Did you try the newest Deus Ex game?
If this is actually what the 4th one is going to be like I might actually not buy it. I felt like 3 really jacked up the travel-across-rooftops aspect of the game and the tree running was more annoying than cool. Plus if it's a pirate thing that means there almost certainly will be more naval missions, and that made me want to burn down Ubisoft headquarters. Some of the full sync requirements (I'm looking at you The Giant and the Storm) were stupid and in no way contingent upon how you played, just dumb luck.
I don't think the ending of AC3 signifies the end of the present-day narrative aspect of the storyline, I just think it suggests a shift. Desmond's story is over, so now a new hero must step up to combat the new threat that appeared at the end of AC3.
If they do a 4th one, which they obviously will, they really need to iron out the Assassin/Templar dynamic because it lost its way in AC3.
ETA: Also, Connor isn't necessarily done. The pirate theme absolutely could be set within Connor's lifespan. In fact, it's even more likely to include him if the trend of the games to move forward in time continues, simply because naval warfare on the scale that is traditionally (and perhaps fancifully/romantically) attributed to pirates expires not that long after. I could absolutely see this being set circa The War of 1812.

meh, I absolutely loved the Naval battles in AC3. My favorite part by far. They needed to have free roam mode with the ships so you could take the boat between Boston and New York and have random encounters with pirates, british ships, or merchant vessels.
The battles were the closest any game got to Sid Meier's Pirates.
