There are modded xbox's on eBay (the original xbox) preloaded with thousand upon thousands of games. Price is anywhere between $100-250 depending on the amount of GBs. A 500gb system apparently holds upwards to 20,000 games. I considered going this route a few years ago before going the raspberry pi route. I can't vouch for those systems, but maybe you can look into one of them? You can buy connections now that'll hook up an original xbox to today's TV's too.

I'm still tempted to buy one every now and then just because.

I will have better luck playing the consoles that I can play on the pi3B+, just at a better performance at least??
If I were you, I'd just give the laptop a shot first to see if it meets your needs. You can download an emulator and a few roms in a matter of minutes to test it out. If it doesn't, try a RP3.

The emulation scene, particularly for "newer" hardware, is constantly evolving. You're not really going to know what you're dealing with until you dive in and start experimenting with some roms / iso's.

I softmodded my original Xbox and loaded it with a handful of Genesis and SNES roms back in the day. The system is sitting on a shelf just above my head in its original box.

The games ran *fine* but I'd go the RP route over it. In fact, I did, because that's what I use to play retro games now. (I'm also not particularly fond of the original Xbox's d-pad or button placement.)

Think I used Mupen64Plus. I just turned my laptop into an emulating system after using a raspberry pi for the past few years. I used retroarch for majority of my emulators and I am pretty sure thats the emulator I used in retroarch. Edit: Did you mean roms? If so, just google it and click on any of the reddit topics that come up. There are always links to roms/isos in the responses there.

If you're on a laptop, TTown is on point with his suggestion.

On the Pi, N64 emulators/roms are very hit and miss, mostly misses.
