Many of these resellers buy many of them to hoard them for resale.
This is a similar issue to the craft beer industry and highly desired beers. In that market, a common approach is for sellers to limit 1 pack per buyer.
Surely there's a reasonable way to assure that the scalpers aren't fricking over regular every day people who just want to buy themselves or their children these consoles.
Justifying scalping

Easy solution: treat pre-ordering just like it should.
When pre-ordering begins, open it in an appropriate time window far enough ahead so manufacturing can at least come close to demand. Or at least be in the same league if not ballpark. Fulfill as many as possible and honor the rest of the pre-orders as quickly as possible. Don’t just say “out of stock”. Just honor my pre-order and deliver it to me a week or two later if need be. Yeah, sucks that I won’t get my XBox on day of release, but at least I know I’m getting one a week or two later and I don’t have to sit in front of a computer all week hitting F5 because someone called Wario on Twatter posted something. BTW, No fkn shite you’re out of stock, they haven’t made the fkn thing yet! This shite of opening up pre-ordering and sites have just 50 or 100 or 10 available is a train wreck for everyone.
Second, limit one per customer by comparing email addresses/log-in usernames, shipping addresses and billing info. So say I want to buy 2 PS5s for me and my kid: well, I have to use a different email addy, different credit/debit card and different shipping address. If any of those match a previous order, no beuno. Yeah, it’s kind of a PITA for people trying to pre-order legitimately, but better than not getting one at all.
All of that basically crushes the secondary market; at least, significantly impacts it.

It happens for low supply items. Have you seen sneaker prices?
You’re just salty you didn’t get one

And as for the bots, I don’t think anything can be done about it. But there are solutions, for example, Adidas website releases a window you can agree to purchase a pair of Yeezy’s if you win the online raffle. That’s much better than having to sit through the Walmart bullshite of checking out and bots hammering the system.

No, I haven't even try to buy one bc I know I'm not going to get one until later. I don't game a ton these days so it's not a high priority for me anyway.
Just because it happens in multiple markets doesn't make it right.
There's also a large difference in shoe markets and these consoles. There's really no choice for consoles, you either get these or you don't. There's no less expensive but just as functional console.

There isn’t random chance when they cheat everyone out of the opportunity to buy one
The bots alone even if they don’t buy one creates extra site traffic and overwhelms the servers used to host these websites they are being sold on.

happens every single console release
I don’t remember this being the case for PS4. I preordered on Amazon in July for a late Oct release and got it no problems. Went on eBay to sell it and they were going for 60 bucks over retail. The supply didn’t get short until Christmas time.

I had no issues getting a PS4 on release day online from Best Buy
I was stationed in Germany and the only issues was it took over a month to ship bc back then the military still used the boat to ship stuff to Europe

Ah yes the good ol American "I got mine so frick everyone else" mentality.
shite isn’t that hard
I got a Series X
PS5
NVIDIA 3090
All off Best Buy all by hand all on release day and all with relatively minimal time spent and effort. You have every opportunity to pick one up, you chose not to do so, so why should I care then?

I mean running bots isn't against the law
They probably are against most sites ToS though. Companies don't care though bc money is money to them no matter where it comes from
