It happens when you keep using something in a match. One round I said F it, I'm going to use an M4. I started rolling then I was unlocking everything. I also like that I can equip something I just earned, in game, right after I die.
ETA: I have a laser on my M4. I don't think it's costed me many lives, but it does give you away in the tunnels.

dev, you should try cooking a cookie loaf. get whatever cookie dough you like, take it out of the wrapper, and bake in the oven for 30 minutes or at least til the outside is done. get a spoon and enjoy the gooey center deliciousness.
