More people buy LCD TVs is all it means. It's also a fact.

Plasmas are all but dead due to their short viewing hours/life.

BTW, the best TVs out there are actually 4K Ultra HD TVs with a LED-backlit LCD panel which is the brightest panel tech of all.

Not true, check the sales lately.

Not for the price as there are no 4K channels and not going to be for years.

BTW, the best rated TV is the Pioneer Kuro Elite, a plasma, and there is only one LED that has picture quality on par with it, and its $6,000.

Plasma's are the best TV with the best overall picture quality.

Plasmas aren't dying because they're bad TVs, it's because they're energy suckers. I have a plasma in my living room, got it real cheap. It gets hot as frick though.

Sales of plasmas are fine because stores are trying to get rid of them. You can get a great deal on a plasma right now. But the glass screen increases glare, that's why I have an LCD for my gaming TV.

Actually there could be some coming as soon as 2014 and Youtube and Vimeo already have 4K capability on their services.

There are also some triple A movies that will make use of 4K later this year or early in the next.

It might not be TV broadcasts but all streaming video will offer 4K soon and that's all that matters to me.

Still, none of this changes the fact that LCD outsells plasma by like 2-1 and that's all he was saying.

Must be decently old, every year they continue to get better and better, especially the 8500 Samsungs this year.

They're trying to get rid of them because the new models are out like with any product, why would you buy a 2012 model with the 2013's out?

Slightly more than say an LCD or LCD LED, but, Plasma's are better for darker rooms and LED's are better for brighter rooms.

Regardless, Plasma's have the best picture quality and you can get them at a better price. Win win.

Buy some curtains.

Yeah I don't hate plasmas or anything, they're just not that popular anymore.

No shite? I had just read a few months ago that DirecTV wasn't even close to bringing 4K and weren't for another few years.

And satellite will get it ahead of anything else, especially DTV like they did with HD.

DirecTV back in February.

Go to Best Buy sometime, they *might* have 2 plasmas on display, but they will probably have one and it will be on sale. Everything else is LCD.

And once again I'm not arguing about the picture quality of a plasma, just the decline in popularity.

Yea I was reading up on it last week because there was a hell of a deal on a China made 4K TV.

BTW,

quote:

Barely one in ten TVs sold are plasmas, a figure that's remained constant for a few years now.

quote:

Sure, fancy new innovations like OLED will definitely takeover in the long-run, but for now, plasma – contrary to popular belief – is still the best TV tech we have.

OLED will be Plasmas nail in the coffin

You can thank the media for the decline.

But your videophiles or people that do heavy research on their own will largely pick Plasma, just like in the OT thread today they had him go with Plasma over 7 pages.

People that go into Best Buy are going to be pushed to buy LED's, more expensive and people think LED is just the end all be all that don't know any better.

Probably not for awhile, Plasma's having the best picture and price point will get them around for awhile still.

Especially as the newer models continue to reduce heat and power consumption.

I know when I move here in a few months my 50" Samsung Plasma is going into the bedroom and I'm buy a new 60" Samsung Plasma for the living room.

Can get the brand new 2013 model 60" for $948 and that was on Amazon, may be able to find an ever better deal. For what you get for what that price, just fantastic.

DirecTV will have it in 2016

quote:

DirecTV has begun the groundwork for a rollout of ultra HDTV (UHDTV), according to a report.

Advanced Television.com said that Philip Goswitz, senior vice president of space and communications and technology development for DirecTV, is preparing for 4,000- and 8,000-line services, although Goswitz did not say when.

Reports have indicated, however, that the format could be ready by as early as 2016

Like I said though, the first channels that will do it will be digital streaming through the net and rumors are we will see those services as soon as 2014. Just rumors so take it FWIW.

Yeah DirecTV is aways away and I'm not leaving DTV with my football and NHL packages yearly.

May actually buy a last years model plasma though for way cheap since I'll get a 4K in 3ish years when it starts rolling out.

No point to load up on a more expensive Plasma with 4K just a few years away.

I have two badass 240Hz LED TVs. I have no need to buy anything right now. I will buy 4K as soon as the content justifies it.

Yeah, I've got a 2010 model Samsung 50" 1080 600Hz plasma that has been a fantastic TV.

Moving and gonna have a larger living room want to get a 60" maybe even 65" but with 4K coming in another few years may just keep this current one until then and get a smaller like 32" or 37" Vizio type for the bedroom then swap a few years down the road.
