Don't worry about the late start. Like Black said, you need to teach him to keep his eye on the ball. I would use something soft, like a stress ball until he catches consistently, then move up to the baseball.
I remember on one of my LL teams, the catcher was a little afraid of the ball. The coach tied him to the fence with the catching gear on and the team pelted him. At first, he cried. Then he started laughing. He turned out to be one of the best catchers I pitched to.
If you son really wants to play, he'll pick it up. Just don't make it seem like a chore right out of the gate.

frick, i hope his mom never found out
dad would have probably been ok with it, but mom would have gone apeshit on the coach

sometimes i have to beg him to come outside because he's playing video games
i don't want him to be that kid and miss out, but i don't want to make him hate what he's doing either

this will be my son's first year on a t-ball team
i'm probably gonna volunteer to asst. coach
i want to be able to yell at him, but i dont want the commitment of being head coach

Here's my suggestion...make it fun for him. Get him to throw the ball as hard as he can at you and watch you catch it. Even let it handcuff you once or twice, show him it doesn't hurt and it's easy to catch.

Great suggestion
I taught my little brother how to catch and throw a ball, now he is 6'5" and pitches for the SLU

I didn't start playing until I was 8. The first year was tough, but after that, my competitive nature took over. There weren't many days I wasn't doing something baseball-related.
If your son enjoys it, you won't have to ask him to come outside.

When I was a youngen, I hated playing ball with my dad. But he was persistent, they signed me up for a teeball league and I wound up dragging him outside every afternoon to get him to pitch to me and hit me grounders.
I could take infield or shag in the outfield for hours.

my son has a knack for picking up grounders, but when i just throw him the ball, he wants to flip his glove down to basket catch it

that's common. Most kids want to do that. Just have to work with him on not doing it.

My dad wasn't the greatest athlete, but he wasn't a spazz. Still, I learned a lot the game from what I saw on TV. And that meant watching Sandberg, Dunston and Grace...where do you think the 17 comes from in my PSN ID?

or when i tell him to use two hands, he tries to clap the ball and sandwich it.....tough to get him to keep the glove open and facing me

You can YouTube instructional videos on how to teach some one to catch.
Just a FYI. It worked on my nephew and he is 5.
