That's what I was thinking. My dad came over and I was finishing up a mission on AC2, and I jumped into one of the canals in Venice. He said "that's so unrealistic, he couldn't swim with all of that stuff on".

The small maps give you the chance to catch three of four spawning at the same time and mow them down.
