Good afternoon y'all. I'm looking at getting a PS 5 for my son. I see that there's a few different type of consoles. Mainly Digital and Disc. Which would y'all recommend and why?

Digital is cheaper and I’ve never had a moment where I needed a disc drive personally. Performance wise it’s the same either route you take.

digital is cheaper. if you are going to let him sign up for playstation account and be online, most games he will buy will be from online tore and downloaded. Few people use the disc these days. Most games today that even come on a disc arent even playable from said disc, you need to download day one patches.
i DO have a disc playstation myself. i subscribe to a disc delivery service cause i like to try off the wall titles without having to pay full price.
Keep in mind the Ps 5 pro, a slightly stronger version, will be coming out soon. it however, will be much more expensive.

do you like having/collecting physical media? then get the disc model.
otherwise, get the digital.

Even if OP doesn't have or like to collect physical media, if his son's friends have physical media, he should get the Disc version so his friends can bring games over to the house.

I always lean towards physical media so I suggest the disc version. Digital would lock him out of getting used copies at GameStop.

If you have PS4 games get the disc version…it’s backwards compatible. Plus you can buy used games off eBay. If you do have PS4 games get an external USB drive for storage of PS4 games. You can’t play PS5 games from the external drive. There’s an internal drive slot for extra PS5 game storage.

PlayStation network was down for half a day earlier this month. It does happen from time to time and also if your internet happens to go down for awhile, he will not be able to play digital games, but could still play the games offline with physical copies.
Those scenarios don’t happen that often, but I do like having physical copies of my games. Also, like others have said at least you can trade your games in or trade with other gamers.
It’s just a personal preference.

If you currently have a ps4 with game discs, get the disc version. Otherwise, digital is just fine.
