PlayStation 1 console

So I’m looking to play some old PlayStation 1 games. My console is not working.
Anyone have the classic console from Best Buy? Is it worth it? Or would buying a regular console on eBay or FB be a better option?

Also remember the fat ps2s are fully backwards compatible with ps1, so if you were looking to get an actual console would likely be more effective to get a ps2

Interesting. That's a pretty small subset of PS1 games in the grand scheme of thing but still good to know.

I want to play Resident Evil, FF VI, and FF Tactics. That’s about it.

WTF He can buy a real PS1 for that much.

Yeah but he would also need all the individual games, and controllers, and PS1 memory cards too. None of them are expensive individually, but they would all add up, especially with shipping. I'm assuming you'd have to buy most of it piecemeal on ebay, unless there is a retro game store in your area.
The classic is a good option for someone who just wants a simple one time purchase and is content with just the games it comes with.
If you see yourself as getting more into the retro gaming scene, you definitely do want to go with the original hardware and accessories though.

Will you be playing on a CRT (tube tv) or a modern LED/LCD?
I would say the PS1 classic would probably be the most convenient. You can connect it via HDMI, which would be much nicer than connecting a an OG PS1 via composite (which looks like shite on a modern tv).
You can now hack the classic with ease, which will allow you to play practically any game, plus, you can use dualshock/analogue controllers. Here is some info on the PS1 Classic hack through Autobleem.
If you do decide to get an original PS1 console, to get the best picture quality on your modern tv, you will need some extra cables and devices. You'll need a good video upscaler ( Cheap upscaler / Expensive nice upscaler) since most PS1 games display at 240p. The cheaper of the two devices work fine, there is just way less customization, and there is noticeably more input lag. High input lag can really cause problems if you're playing a game that requires precise timing.
Also, you'll need a PS1 SCART cable. This replaces the standard shitty composite cables and allows your PS1 to display video in RGB, which is the best possible picture you can get from the console.

Here’s my advice OP...
Stay away from the PS1 Classic unless you’re going to hack it.
The library is limited and almost half the games are PAL region instead of NTSC. These PAL games will have frame rates targeting 25 or 50 fps instead of the NTSC’s 30 or 60 fps. In addition to the reduced framerate, these games will also have constant judder.
You can’t go wrong with original hardware. You can also play PS1 games on any PS2 or PS3, and don’t forget about emulation on PC.

Download Retroarch. Use PCSX Rearmed for RE games and Beetle PSX for everything else.
I guess the Classic is okay as long as you hack it. Especially since it's only like $40 now.
PS3 is another good option and the most convenient. Emulation is good enough and same with the upscaling through HDMI.
