PC Upgrade Help-UPDATE

Let me start off by saying that I am not a huge gamer on PC but I want my PC to be able to handle most games when I do want to play. A few months ago my PC took a crap on me so I just grabbed one off of Amazon to get me by for a bit. It has been awhile since I built a PC so I am out of touch. I was hoping if someone could tell me if I could upgrade this one a bit and do what I need or do I just need to go ahead and build again. Here is the specs of what I have right now:
7th Generation Intel Core i5-7400 Processor (Up to 3.5GHz)
12GB DDR4 2400MHz Memory
Connectivity- 802.11ac wireless LAN, Gigabit LAN. Drive Interface-SATA 6 Gbps. 2TB 7200RPM SATA3 Hard Drive
Intel HD Graphics 630
Windows 10 Home

I’d update the RAM to 16GB of 3000mhz or 3200mhz if the mobo can handle that speed, and upgrade the graphics card. Which one, I’m not sure. That will depend on your budget I think.

Budget isnt much if an issue. The games I play are Tropico 6, Company of Heroes. The Forest. Nothing tok demanding. I just dont want to buy what I do not need and was hoping not to have to do a build

His ram is fine right now. Probably just needs a gpu.
I think a RX 590 is 200. Gotta be careful about size with that case though.

It's fine to have a large SATA drive, but not as your primary hard drive. Get at least a 128 GB SSD to install your OS on. Use the 2 GB SATA for storage.
12 GB of RAM is sort of an awkward number. I would bump that up to 16 GB (2 sticks of 8 each or 4 sticks of 4 each. You want the number of sticks to be even)
Now you just need a nice graphics card like a 1080 ti and you are set. You can go to pcpartpicker.com and build it virtually that way you can make sure everything is compatible with each other.

i would agree with a video card but is a SSD really necessary or is it a "nice to have" type of component? unless there's something else to them, the only thing you get out of it is faster boot/load times.

PSU most definitely. i forgot store bought PCs have a relatively low wattage limit.

For the price of SSDs now, there's no excuse not to have one. Load times are a pretty big deal

Depends on what your doing. For most people who just browse internet, watch youtube, and play occasional games, 8 is just fine.
If you game a lot, even 8 GB is fine in most cases. Really depends on your GPU/CPU combo.
EDIT: Full disclosure - I have 16 GB in my build from 3 years ago, mostly because back then 16 GB of DDR4 was cheap as hell

If you aren't planning on doing VR then I would look at a better video card (a 1050 or 1060), maybe a little more RAM (and/or bump it up to 2666MHz, if possible) and swap out that 2TB HDD for a SSD (SSD prices are insanely low). Before you get the video card make sure you check your power supply first to make certain you have enough juice for it (if you're right at the border, upgrade the PSU first).

SSD for your OS and any apps that can utilize it. I typically recommend 250 for the occasional app.
Lower end apps and data storage on the 2TB.
