Well, I now own a xfx r9 290. Picked it up for $315 with hopes of it fully unlocking to a 290x. Even if it doesn't unlock, I'm going to water block it and add a second down the line.

I've been looking at the 290 and the 290x. Is there any real point in waiting for the 290x prices to drop? I'm not one to push anything to the absolute max but I do plan on adding a second card down the line for tri-monitor gaming.

My powrrcooler didn't wasn't able to unlock even with the model number claiming to be unlockekable, so blah.
Still don't know how it performs since I've never used it for anything. It has a block on it, just haven't felt like installing into my HTPCs loop... No games to play...

Don't expect Newegg and the like to sell them below retail anytime soon, but you can go on eBay and get a use 290x for $450 or less all day long. Pretty sure the 290's are going for <$350 most of the time, too. Mining for profit has all but died, so there's a scramble to sell hardware, saturating the used market.

just to say you have the top of the line AMD basically. There's about a 5-7% difference between the 290 and the 290x, and that difference couldn't justify a extra $100+. Both are still very fast. You can pick up $400 Sapphire reference 290x's all day on ebay right now. Sapphire's warranty doesn't cover 2nd party owners though. If it fails, you're fricked. Removing factory cooler is also against the law, according to Sapphire. Lifetime warranty and the fact it carried over is what really made me decide to go with the xfx, even though it isn't the top of the line.

Yeah, in the OCN thread, it looks like there's a 50% chance of the part number card that I bought unlocking. One guy has 3 of the cards I bought and all of them unlocked, but there's a lot of guys that their's didn't. You know how the chip lottery is. Would be awesome if it does.

I can do everything but the block. My 290 block is the EK nickel with clear acrylic w/ backplate. It is the prettiest damn block I have ever owned.
IDK about the performance yet because its been sitting on my shelf, but should be great. EK made the best blocks for the GK110 cards, oddly they had been the only company to actively cool the VRMs.

That's the first one I was looking at, but will probably go XSPC Razor so it will match the cpu block I'm going to get.
