And meanwhile I still have no clue which phone I'm going to get. Given my wife's data usage and my occasional data use spikes, I'm definitely not going to be able to switch to straight talk, so I'm still preferring the phones that offer the subsidized pricing. I've essentially eliminated the S4 as an option, and pretty close to eliminating the Nexus 5 the more I read about it -- but mostly because since I'm staying with AT&T, I'd be paying more for a lesser phone (albeit slightly).

The nexus 5 is the best phone on the market right now. Spec wise, no, but touchwiz really hinders what the Samsung phones can possibly be.

Idk why you would X out the Nexus 5.

Its easily the best phone experienced I've had minus the camera.

Nooo lol

The red looks offensive! Lol

Son of a fricking bitch.

I just typed a long arse response about all the shite I require in a phone. And clicked the wrong fricking thing, and it's gone.

I'll just say the only reason I wouldn't get an N5 is because of the price, since I do the 2-year subsidized pricing upgrades with ATT. Nexus 5 doesn't seem to blow away the competition unless you're comparing bang for buck with unsubsidized pricing..

Here's the list again, condensed without explanation, so I'm sure I'll get some frustrating replies.

- Good camera

- Good battery life (talk time being the least important spec)

- Ability to tether without a tethering plan (even if jailbreaking/rooting required)

- Ability to "acquire" certain apps for free(same)

- High build quality to withstand the occasional toddler drop or "oops I forgot my phone was in my lap when I stood up."

- Good, loud external speaker

- Digitizer that maintains same level of responsiveness with a basic static-cling screen protector.

Nexus 5 camera is good. It actually shoots some of the best low light footage of any phone. It's not on the level of 5s, note 3, etc.

You'll see mixed opinions here with the Nexus 5. I'm a very heavy user, and I can make it to 8-9pm before I get to that 10% spot. Plus this phone charges FAST.

Nexus 5 does this out of the box.

May need to root and get titanium back up for this

Nexus 5 has great build quality. Some people say the screen is amazing, but from my time having it... I dropped the damn thing once from about 3 feet and it cracked. It's now been beaten to hell but I have zero problems with its functionality

Only phone you'll find this on is the HTC one

no idea about this. Never use them since they're fairly useless

Cool. Do you have knowledge of other phones?

The N5 camera appears to be the same as the 4s. Which isn't bad, but I'd prefer an upgrade in that department.

Screen protectors prevent scratches on the glass. Makes resale easier. I use the cheap ones from amazon (i know how to install them properly), and change them out every few months as needed.

That's an issue for me. I've dropped many phones and never has the screen cracked.

black 32gb. It shipped the soonest and I figure that I will be using the phone for a while so space will be at a premium without expandable storage. I considered the white, but that shiny plastic rim really hurts the aesthetic. Also, red was just too much for me.
Ilike, I understand that the N5 doesn't make sense for ATT, but I don't go over 2gb most months and I am really tired of getting raped by ATT.
Blue, any opinions on cases that add durability without a lot of weight/bulk. I also hate grippy backing that inhibits the ability to slide into and out of pockets.

I need to look into why some people hate TouchWiz, and which of the "bad" things about it are unremovable. Seems like I can make a backup of the ROM and install a new UI by rooting and flashing an AOSP-based ROM to it, clear out the cache/do a factory reset/etc.

Sold my cards for $900

Now I need to find me a nice white case (h440?) and a new card. I'm feeling that white PCB 780 or 770s going back with the white/black theme

Simple, honest question. The nexus 5 is worth the extra $150 over every other phone available at AT&T's 2-year contract price? I'm still not totally sure if you've read that part yet.

As I've already said, I have att, so I know its more expensive than every other phone. Except the galaxy note 3 which is the only other phone I would buy. Its $350 after tax and upgrade fee

Have you used the S4?

EDIT: It may be worth getting the nexus just to stay out of another contract with AT&T, not that I can think of any other plan to switch to, but I guess it would be nice to have the option.

The S5 specs look good, though. Just trying to figure out why TouchWiz is so horrible that it ruins everything else about the phone.

TouchWiz

Samsung phones always spec nicely, but they have to because touchwiz is so resource heavy. Ive had an s4, and my dad currently has an s4, and there are some frustrating lag moments that plague touchwiz. It also is a pain not being able to get updates until 6 months after the newest android update has been released.

Touchwiz has some nice features, but you won't get the smoothness and ease of use that a stock android phone has

Its kind of like a skin companies put over stock android so they have more control over the OS. It uses lots of their apps and UI instead of Google. It uses a lot more power to run both touch wiz and droidOS
