x79 wouldn't do him any good since he said that it would be primarily for mining.

He asked "how will this affect gaming?" Don't 290s have a small increase in hash over the 280x?

Edit: It looks like he's going to run the mining card in the x16 slot and two cards for gaming in x4/x4, right?

Yeah but I would also like to do some gaming on it as well. Is it really worth going with a different CPU/mobo which will cost quite a bit more?

Are you going to mine with all 3 cards or mine with 1 and game with 2?

My third card will probably be here this week or next week, so I'll let you know how it scales on Z87, unless you get your stuff first.

This is just for mining though, but I'll test gaming performance as well. I predict that it will provide a small increase in benchmarks at least, but definitely not the gain you get from moving from one card to two. And then getting games to play nice with three cards will be interesting.

If I were going with 3 or 4 cards for gaming, I'd get X79. Otherwise, there will be performance loss from the PCIe bandwidth being cut in half for two of the cards. It will be worse for the 290s.

But luckily, for mining, you can use an x1 slot and still get a good hashrate.

Once I finish fricking around with tri-fire tests, my plan is to mine with all three, and game with only one whenever I feel like gaming.

Ugh now I am playing with the idea of exchanging the cpu and mobo and going with x79 setup.

Also, are you running powered risers on any of your cards? From what I understand the 16x slots should provide enough power to not require them but I want to be safe.

No, if you are putting them in x16 slots, you will get the full 75 watts from the mobo. You will also need your usual PSU connections, which is the most important source of power.

If this is mostly for gaming (i.e., you're keeping tri-fire for the long haul and not just for the current mining frenzy), I'd go with X79. But the extra PCI-e bandwidth won't affect mining performance, and it still won't guarantee that those three cards will play nice together in games. It's only in the last year or so that 2-way crossfire has become reliable.

Like I said, I should have my stuff soon, but Ive never used SuperBiiz before so I don't know how quickly they ship, or where their warehouses are (I used UPS ground, so it could take one day if coming from TN, or 403242038 days if coming from CA)

There's over 100k/h difference between the two. Most are saying that they are getting between 850k/h-900 with a 290x. That's over a 20% difference. $1500 for roughly 2.7m/h seems like a deal, especially considering that they'll pay for themselves in less than a month.

Well I just found a really good benchmark result that doesn't show much of a difference between x4, x8, and x16 so I think I might just stay with my current setup. Performance-wise, at least.

But yeah, we shall see if all 3 play nicely.

I would stay, considering that you could mine on 2 of those cards at the same time that you're playing with the 3rd one and have really good performance with both mining and gaming. It's a win/win in my opinion.

I haven't turned the heat on in a week. I break a sweat just sitting next to my computer right now.

That's testing one card's bandwidth? Not quite valid for tri-fire. There will be a bottleneck -- whether it's the PCIe bandwidth, the CPU, or the games themselves. However, you don't need to game with three 290x cards anyway, even at 1440p, so there's no real need to go with X79 unless you have money to burn.

I sure hope I make some money off of this mining. I always have terrible luck. I never make the right decision regarding when to sell. LTC has been up and down, with an overall trend down since they reached their high of over $40 the other day. Now they are at $30 average. Still good, but with my luck, it will all be over by the time my 280x is in a UPS truck.
