I have an extra modem. I was thinking of buying this and just hooking it straight up to my blu ray player I stream with and eventually other items in the same location. Any reason I shouldn't?

An extra modem? What purpose would that serve?
Posted on 8/17/13 at 1:49 pm to ILikeLSUToo
The blu ray I stream with is on the opposite side of the house of my router. Usually the signal does fine but sometimes it doesn't. This would just make sure I don't have any problems. I already have the modem because charter sent me a brand new one so I figure a cheap router would do the trick.

It's crazy. My IT guy said he was able to basically order better products like an I7 over an I5 from dell for very little added cost if any because they based their pricing around ghz.

Well to be fair they only had 1 in stock so to sell out they only needed one Kige Ramsey window licker with money or room on his credit card.
Still though that is a PC that IBuyPower obviously sells there and through other retailers. I can't believe people buy that crap and/or some of the other ones they build. I see them advertise that a PC with a GTX610 on it will run BF3 or Skyrim. Just pure bullshite.

Doing some minor modding

yep.
people who want a gaming computer but dont know how to build it are easily scammed. really its just marketing / lack of intelligent consumers. most people understand that an i7 is better than an i5, therefore they sell the i7 at a huge markup. ditto with HDD space and RAM. super cheap upgrades but the avg consumer THINKS they need it so the demand is up and you can sell it at a premium.
by contrast, very few consumers know ANYTHING about video cards. they dont understand what they need or what added value they provide. thus there is no incentive to selling them. also added to that is the price fluctuations that vid cards experience make them difficult to stock.
ive gone over all this quite a bit trying to formulate a successful strategy for a custom computer website with my cousin.

Go to the intel website and read the description for the I series. They lead you to believe you need an i7 for everything.

For nearly $3000 that's kind of ridiculous.
At least have some RAID 256 SSDs and then maybe a 4 TB storage drive.

yeah. informed consumers build, not buy. thus they put out a bunch of propaganda so
a) it sounds magical and you need to be a genius to understand it
and
b) you buy more than you need
the exact opposite is the group that buy the cheapest new computer they can and then bitch its slow after a year. "but its only a year old!" i hear like every fricking day. yes, its only a year old, its also a celeron processor. should have come to us instead before purchasing - is my usual snide reply.

Are you a marketing major?
You just sold me on this SSD technology rift raft.

32GB memory? WTF does a gaming PC need that shite for?
Not only that, but dual channel instead of quad will just become bottlenecked. The benefit of having 32GB for say video encoding would never be felt.

Water cooling? I hope..
Posted on 8/17/13 at 3:07 pm to jcole4lsu
You know you say that about people seeing bigger numbers and thinking it is better and it's very true. I sold a PC yesterday with a 560 in it and the guy said he had been looking at building his own and was looking at using the base model 650Ti. I told him that the 560 is actually a little bit better than the 650Ti and he said to me "Oh really because I figured the higher number would mean it's faster"

Unfortunately not. Not that it woul matter sine I can't my voltage high enough to get it hot. Unless you have an extra universal water block laying around...

yeah most get very confused by that. the numbering system in GPUs are the easiest scam on earth.
who needs a 570 when ive got a shiny 610 here for ya!
processor speed is another one. oh looky it runs at 3.2ghz. this pentium must be better than that lowly 2.8ghz i5!
Posted on 8/17/13 at 3:40 pm to jcole4lsu
Haha I know what you mean. They dont think about differences in architecture.
