20% higher costs for 30% performance(not including FG) with 50% more memory.

Better value than the 3070 was at the time. Not that was saying a whole lot. Who the frick would pay 500 for an 8gb card at that time.

It's better than anything AMD or Nvidia has on the higher levels. W/O going into $1600 vile.

With inflation and TSMC's skyrocketing prices, we're stuck with this. Too many eggs placed in their basket.

If I do upgrade this gen, this will be the one. I'll wait to see what AMD has, but I like heavy RT and the AMD simply won't be able to keep up. I'll wait and see for the 7800xtx, it should be priced around the same price.

I think there are two possibilities left for me this Gen:

1. Nvidia releases a 4080ti with a full fat 102 die but with the same 16gb of vram for $1,200. With the original 4080 sliding down to $999.

2. AMD releases a groundbreaking card with 3D cache, etc, that resets the market.

Outside of those two options, I’m likely a skip.

Ya, this gen is a likely skip. I'll wait and see what comes out, but my 1080ti is still holding up. I obviously have to reduce settings. No different from my previous r9, 290x and 7870.

Inflation is hitting tho. If I was atm, it would be the 4070, but that's just now.

Josh, i'm not looking to do so, but am just curious. Is there anything from AMD or Nvidia that is an upgrade over the 3080 and worth the cost? I've been looking at them but nothing sticks out as worth it.

ETA: At 1440p

"Worth the cost" is always relative, but my personal answer is no. Conveniently for you, I have a 3080 and play at 1440UW (3440x1440), so you can basically just substitute my opinion regarding my own future purchases directly to your situation

I'm holding out unless/until one of the two options occur from my post a few posts up. As someone who already has a high end card, nothing interests me as an upgrade outside of the 4090, and I, like most people, have a hard time justifying the cost.

I wouldn't worry about that card at that resolution. Only if you want frame generation. I can't imagine going to 8 hundo for a "worthy" upgrade that only has 12 gb of ram.

3080 is still a good card.

Come to think about it, I don't think a 4070ti would be a worthy upgrade... Have fun with that.

Looks like AMD is waking up:

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT drops to $610 prior to GeForce RTX 4070 launch

Saw a 7900 XT for $780 this morning:
ASRock 7900XT at Newegg for $779

Funny how fast thats dropped way below it's $900 MSRP when everyone kind of thought it should have been an ~$800 card to start with as the 7900XTX was $1k

The one niche use case for the 4070 where it makes sense is people doing brand new itx builds.

Otherwise, I just don’t get paying $599 for that.

The 6950XT right now at $610 is a steal if you’re building a new pc.

RX 6800 now $469 as well. LINK

Meanwhile, hours after the GeForce RTX 4070 launched, there is still no issue of availability. TechPowerUP reports that out of 19 listed models, 9 are still sold at MSRP directly by NVIDIA or through 3rd party sellers. Furthermore, the more expensive models are not necessarily much faster given the NVIDIA strict limit on manual overclocking of RTX 4070 GPU.

I can't remember exactly when, but at some point we had a discussion about upscaling technologies (DLSS/FSR) vs native. I recall trying to encourage the individual to use upscaling, but I was struggling to articulate why. With that said, Hardware Unboxed released a video today doing a deep dive into comparing upscaling technologies against native from a purely visual perspective. While I think the "conclusions" in the individual games are useful, the reason I'm posting it here is that I think the video does an extremely good job showing the types of things to look for when comparing levels of upscaling tech against native. Put another way, graphical issues that one might otherwise just write off as a flaw with the game might be an indication to switch from upscaling to native, or vice versa. Anyway, very good video, in my opinion:

Is DLSS Really "Better Than Native"? - 24 Game Comparison, DLSS 2 vs FSR 2 vs Native

Went ahead and bought a 4070. Only like 60 dollars more than a 6800XT. I'll pay the Nvidia tax.

Any reason you passed on the 6950xt you can currently get for $30-$50 more?

Better raster for far less RT and no dlss(yes fsr, but it's inferior). Hard pass. I got an AIB card for MSRP, btw.

I'll pay the Nvidia tax.

Although, the < 1/3 of full die chaps my arse.

I don’t know that it’s the choice I would have made, but considering your priorities, that makes sense

Agreed, you'd have to be ignorant or a really shitty consumer.

6800XT was going for 530ish. So what's that mean for the Nvdia tax?
