8th gen i5/7 and gtx 1070 is the minimum for $1500

Thanks

How limited are gaming laptops compared to desktops at around that price range?

I'm knowledgeable about a good bit of things, but this is one that is like learning a new language for me

Pretty limited because of thermals and form factor.

Can't wait till the AMD cards come out. If they come in under 600 and can compete with a 1080 TI, I'm jumping on it since I already have freesync.

Have an MSi GE-73 laptop with 6 core CPU and 1070, both pasted with liquid metal and see no lower than 80-85 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider running at 1080p Ultra.

Was more than 1500, though. Has 32GB RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD, 1TB m.2 SSD, and 2TB Firecuda SSHD.

The Polaris refresh cards aren't competing with the 1080ti.

Not the Polaris. The 7nm Vegas

Why? It's a "refined" last gen arch on a die shrink.

You get higher clocks and less power draw. That is good but it will be hard to come close to a used 1080 Ti price/performance.

7nm Vega 20 is for data centers, they aren't consumer cards.

AMD already said they are bringing it to gamers earlier this year.

Not sure if confirmed. I know rumored.

No they didn't, the mid range Polaris refresh is the only gamer card in 2018.

Navi is set at Q2 2019 and that's likely pushing it.

7nm Vega 20 is a data center card.

quote:

Vega 20" is not a mere die-shrink of the "Vega 10" GPU die to the 7 nm node. For starters, it is flanked by four HBM2 memory stacks, confirming it will feature a wider memory interface, and support for up to 32 GB of memory. AMD at its Computex event confirmed that "Vega 20" will build Radeon Instinct and Radeon Pro graphics cards, and that it has no plans to bring it to the client-segment. That distinction will be reserved for "Navi," which could only debut in 2019, if not later.

Yeah I just read rumors about 2-3months ago and that is it. It would be dumb to waste that 7nm Fab space at TSMC on a card that won't sell.

Pump out some good mid range cards and your good CPUs that will sell.

Intel announced their new 9th gen CPUs and also their x299 refresh.

Finally giving their HEDT 8C/16T i9 9800x back the 44 PCIe lanes!

Can't wait.

My main rig is busted with a bad Intel microcode update pushed in the W10 1803 update.

X99 boards are really effected. Been holding out for this Intel update.

I haven't noticed a problem, thankfully. I know some people that have had some screwy problems with USB drivers and such
