True, that's a good start for you.

Every gaming PC advice thread on the Tech board has lulz.

Yeah I avoid the tech board at damn near all costs, maybe the occasional major phone news or release and a TV thread here and there.

Just a quick question, what would be the best way to swap a motherboard and CPU out for an upgrade without reinstalling Windows?
Posted on 6/26/18 at 4:03 pm to tehchampion140
I just did that when I swapped mine last year without reinstalling Windows, I will try and find the article that listed everything to uninstall in device manager but I did that and manually reinstalled my new mobos drivers and have had no issues at all.
Also what version/edition of Windows do you have and is it a code you bought online or torrent version or OEM?

I use Windows 10 and it came from the free upgrade from Windows 7 that I got from LSU years ago.

You may search around on the net and see if you can find it, list of what all to uninstall in device manager. Basically anything related to your mobo and cpu, chipset drivers, network drivers, pcie controller, etc. It was quite a few things.

LINK I've been browsing around a bit and found different videos and articles but this youtube video seems like the easiest and most thorough so far.

This isn't handled by BOOTMNGR?
If you waste time going delete programs, then just do a fresh image of W10.
To answer your question. BOOTMGR will correct issues on first boot of new hardware with the UEFI.

How much is on the volume?
This will just cause future headaches sometimes. Just saying if you go through that, then just reimage. You can pull your W10 out with a tool and create you a W10 config file before reinstall.

I'm pretty PC illiterate so I may need a more detailed explanation
.
I figured reinstalling Windows would be a lot more time consuming and potentially lead to messing things up since I'm not good at this stuff. It's likely my last hardware upgrade for a while anyway and I will likely just build an entire new rig from scratch years from now when I finish residency and start making more money.

I never mentioned deleting programs, just the drivers for your motherboard and cpu so there are no issues when you install the new drivers for the new one. Chipset driver, network driver, etc. Stuff installed and used by your old motherboard that will be replaced by the new one.
This is what I did with the help of an article because I did not want to reinstall Windows, but I also went from Z170 to Z370 so it was fairly simple and minor, thus no issues.
It is still recommended to do a fresh install for a new motherboard.
Now if he has an OEM key and used a free upgrade to W10, I think there can be some issues switching motherboards and he may need a new key.

BOOTMGR will handle first boot into W10 envoriment with universal drivers. W10 will cycle with specific driver updates after if you don't force.
If your computer doesn't boot after simply changing the MOBO/CPU then you have problems with the image of W10. This is one thing UEFI and decent universal drivers from Windows. BOOTMGR runs first FOR the purpose of checking if the envoriment is ready.
I don't see the point of doing this now. Old days yes, but tools are in place now for self correction or unattended corrections.

There is a tool for extractionof that key. Let me Google.

My parts came in today but I'm waiting until tomorrow to put it together so I can make sure I do what's best. If you have an easier/better way of doing things definitely let me know.

So I'm having issues reactivating windows 10 after swapping parts. I called support and they said I need the product key from the windows 7 that I got from LSU many years ago which I of course don't have anymore. Now they're saying the only way I can reactivate is to buy another key. Such BS.
