I think my 11 yr old mobo is toast. You guys helped me build my first rig that long ago.

Should I replace the mobo or use this opportunity to full on upgrade?

Ideas? I believe everything else is in working order

What’s your usage case? Work? Gaming? Specifics on either?

Like to game but lately has been more work. As you can tell my rig has not been able to run the best games

If you’re looking to do any gaming whatsoever, I would definitely say it’s time for a rebuild. You can obviously bring the case forward. You can potentially bring forward the psu depending on what other parts you choose.

You will have to replace the mobo obviously, which will then require a new CPU and RAM.

You can carry the power supply, case, storage and GPU forward for now and just upgrade those if/when you feel compelled but the mobo/CPU/RAM will basically all have to be done together.

ETA: you can get something like an ASRock Z790 mobo, i-5 13600 + fan, and 32gb DDR5 ram for probably $400.

Is this a good option to basically do a partial upgrade at this point then I can build on from there?

Is a full tower move necessary?

What's your budget? Honestly, I would get rid of everything. Maybe keep the case if you want.

By full tower move do you mean getting a new tower to install everything in? If your current tower has adequate space and mounting specs to hang the new mobo then you should be fine to keep the current tower.

There's nothing wrong with your GPU unless you're trying to run games that it can't handle. In that situation you'd need a GPU upgrade to run the games. Otherwise there's no reason to upgrade it.

Similarly, there's nothing wrong with the 256gb SSD and 1tb HDD. You could upgrade to PCIe SSD if you found yourself running games where the faster read/write times made a difference for you. Otherwise there's really no pressing reason to upgrade those right now.

The mobo/CPU/RAM situation is just basically a forced upgrade because your current CPU won't physically fit into mobos made for the newer gen CPUs, and ddr3 ram won't physically fit into the slots on a DDR5 mobo.

$2k or less.

I'm thinking I'll get the mobo going then maybe get a slow rebuild over time?

If you go mobo, you'll need CPU and ram as well. I would do everything at once.

Your issue is that your platform is so old that buying an equivalent AM3+ motherboard would cost like $200. And if you buy anything more recent, neither your CPU nor RAM will be compatible.

You can replace CPU RAM and Mobo for $1k with an AM5 leading edge setup. To make 1k, you may be limited to 64GB of RAM for now, depending on if you get a CPU that includes a cooler or not. Just replacing those three components for now limits your troubleshooting if anything goes wrong because you know all the other stuff is known working.

If there is any component id also replace this go round, it’d be the power supply. I’m guessing it’s not fully modular and it can make your life easier not having a tangle of crap to keep moving around. Optional though.

Yes sorry. When I'm saying mobo, I'm meaning doing all three like you all have suggested.

So what a good option if I want the mobo, CPU, and RAM to last another 5 -10 years

What exactly do you need it for for work, and what games are you looking to play, at what resolution, what settings, and what target FPS?

It's a PC for pleasure. Gaming. Doc storage. Simply want something modern/advanced to handle current gen of games

I hear ya, but we need detail

What games are you looking to play, at what resolution, what settings, and what target FPS?

You've got a budget, which potentially means tradeoffs. We need to know where to make those tradeoffs. Also, does the $2k include buying a monitor, or are you keeping what you have?

Lol I have no idea. Currently my resolution is 1920x1080 I believe.

For example, FPS games would be ideal whether it's Call of Duty or Hell Let Loose. I like RTS games as well. Also play Diablo.

I have a monitor I would keep but open to a second monitor
