From what I've read, cars you have stored in your garage (and customized) will end up in the impound if you total them or lose them. Having said that, I have no idea where the impound is since I'm not that far into the game.
I wish it handled custom cars in a similar fashion to Saints Row the 3rd and 4 where you can request your custom vehicle be delivered to you wherever you are in the game. I know that would break realism but I might be willing to make that concession for convenience sake.

When you think about all the systems and and mechanics that have to be wound into a game like this...cars, garages, impounds, radio stations, mini games like golf and tennis, watching movies, eating, training a dog, reading a mock up of facebook and all the ideas that went into them, the ways the characters interact with NPC's, weather, time, graphics...and then there's the story and multiplayer.
How in the hell do they do it and it all work out? stout is right, it's no wonder Rockstar is heads and tails above everyone else.

Ha! Yeah, I saw this but it confused me. At some early point the game told me "You need to get Franklin's car out of the impound." But I ignored it for the moment because I was content with the car I had. I go to Franklin's house 2 minutes later and his car is sitting in the driveway. So, I had no reason to go to the impound any more and didn't make a mental note of it's location.
I've read a little more about this impound stuff, though, and people are claiming it's buggy as hell right now. Plenty of people saying they dumped 40k+ into a car, lost it in a mission, and the car never shows up in an impound or garage. If you're worried about your virtual cash, it might not be worth customizing cars until they patch it.

Oh, I agree that the amount of systems at play here is impressive. That's not to say I won't have my personal wish list for how it can be improved. I won't expound on any of that until I've played more of the game, though.

Something similar happened to me so I haven't been to the impound yet. Plus it's not that hard to drive over to the Beverly Hills-ish area and jack a badass car.

Just went ham for the first time and killed 3 choppers with a pistol, only 4 stars though. When they crash it looks so fricking awesome.

Wouldn't that be some shite if you actually went to prison in the game? You couldn't play for like an hour or so. Makes for an interesting game if you actually get punished for your choices and get caught.

Sorry if this is a spoiler-ish question but has anybody gotten paid from Tanya yet I think I've done five missions for her and yet to get anything out of it.

I'm like 99% sure I am done with her story and you don't get paid ever. Once you finish it you can by the tow company though.
