Level 23, still in superior Steel armor
Steel plate? or regular steel?
If regular, have you not found anybody with better armor you could steal it from?

Is it possible to get by without crafting?
You can get by but it is going to get harder and harder. I'm level 47 and I still haven't seen any daedric armor. I had to make it.
And woa Nelson.... Daedric with level 100 enchants has me mopping the floor with most mobs.
Heck the best armor find to date was last night I found a dragonscale helm in a Dwemmer ruin.
Smithing really isn't that hard freaux. It took me one day to get to 100.

Anyone know where I can find a mage-type follower?

As a magic caster, I don't really forsee it being too hard to get by without crafting. Enchanting, alchemy, yeah. But I'll never really wear heavy armor or use weapons, so I see no need for me to improve my crafting.

Level 22 High Elf Mage
I have about 32k gold in my pocket and am going to buy a house soon.
(epic)Glass Helmet with -19% destruction cost
(epic)Glass Bracers with +35 magicka
Still using Armor of the Gods(-15%destruction cost) and Boots of the Gods(+20% sneak) until I get some more grand souls for the rest of my glass armor.
Gold Diamond necklace with +15% magic resistance
Gold ring with -19% destruction cost.
95 enchanting
92 smithing
82 alchemy
75 destruction
61 light armor
41 alteration(just from transmutation which I just got a few quests ago)
Only have Unrelenting Force and Fire Breath...but about 10 unused dragon souls.
It is funny, frost trolls and giants were wrecking me early, but I with Impact and barely any destruction cost they can't get near me. Also, messing around with beast mode is great. Took out a whole fort of forsworn using just that.

I wouldn't mind knowing this as well. My character tanks the shite out of stuff. I'd be nice if my follower was just a ranged DPS type instead of Lydia who gets in the way most of the time.

Must be a static drop then.. I found it as well (first good piece)
And I turned it up to Expert after getting my good armor.. it was too easy. (until I went into that guys dream.. those daedra mage things are beasts..)

Test J'zargo's fire cloaks (mage college apprentice guy) you can actually do it really early on in the mage series of quests.. he shoots a bow and casts spells.

It's not about being hard, I just want to max 2-Hand/Conj/Heavy/Restor
I just feel that if you aren't going for Daedric (I don't have the the skill points) that's it's pointless to put any points in it.
I think my character is a little TOO combat oriented, I should have done one or the other, or fit it in somehow.
I wish there was a respec option because I should have gone Alteration not Restoration given the lame ward operation. That was the whole point of my build.

Or the Black Star Quest and return it to Aenea. She's quite awesome.

I need to go back to him and see if he gives me the option. I am looking for the books about the orb I found under Saarthal and Lydia is just not up to snuff. She is fine for carrying shite but I have actually gotten to the point that I have her wait in a good location and just take loot back to her. My Staff of the Familiar actually helps more in battle than she does.

level 41 because of all my pickpocketing mostly..
100 pickpocketing, smithing, 95 enchanting, 60ish alch, 75ish destro, nothing else above 50 I think..
full legendary dragonscale (light armor ftw)
helm -25% destro cost
chest -26% destro cost
gaunts + 50 magicka
boots + 39% sneak (boot enchants SUCK)
gold necklace -20% destro cost
ruby ring -20% destro cost
got about 10 shouts but only half unlocked.. I don't want to "calm a beast" with my shouts..

But.. the black star for returning it to the other guy is a better item.

I made Lydia a mage by giving her every staff I don't use. She will default to those it seems.

Was wondering what would happen if I stripped her of her armor and weapons and gave her cloth and a staff, haha. I was just afraid she'd be really bad at it. Wasn't sure if the followers had strong points that they were better at.

I don't need her to kill things, I just need her for her storage capacity and to stay out of my way and maybe be an occasional meat shield.

Anyone encountered any bugs where you get an arrow or ice spike stuck in your character?
Had this problem last night. My guy was walking around with an ice spike stuck in his crotch and it wouldn't go away. Had to reload an earlier save.

Got hit with a disarm spell and my bow went flying. For some reason my character was still clutching an arrow in his hand though
Stayed that way for a while then finally disappeared

Followers do not scale in level with you as you use them. What I mean is they don't gain levels on your travels with them.
They scale to the level you meet them.
So if you meet lydia at level 1, then lydia will totally suck and if you meet lydia at level 50 she will be much better.
Thus any follower you meet later in the game is better than the follower early in the game.
I read this..... I have no idea if it is true because i have never used a follower unless I was forced to on a quest.

my strategy with followers lately has been to just let them follow me around if they want, but I'm not buying a mercenary and I don't store things in them because last time she died and that sucked... If it dies it dies oh well
