The gold generating support items gain ward charges on completing their quest and buying the 2nd phase of that item. (The quest being generating 500 gold via the item passive).
The fully upgraded support item (3rd and final item), provides a full set of ward charges.

The runes aren't bad. 5 major trees, each tree has 3 keystone masteries, then 3 additional inferior (for lack of a better term) masteries/runes.
You can pick only one keystone, and one of three unique runes in each of the 3 inferior rune sets.
Then you can pick two inferior masteries from another tree for a total of 6.
Seems intimidating at first, but once you read over them, it's not too bad.
