That sounds ideal, but I want to say the transferred items still show up in the workshop inventory, which leads me to believe you still have to do the extra step to get the materials.
right. if you don't do the extra step to break down the materials, you lose the other materials when you use an item for just one of its materials.
this was posted a few pages back in a quote from reddit on how to breakdown items

Junk is scrapped as needed by the workbench. You just need to transfer all junk to workbench and as you need certain things, the bench will scrap.
no you have to manually scrap each item of junk for its individual resources
so if you have a gold watch and you use the spring from it for something without scrapping it first, you lose the gold portion of the materials.

If you really wanted to scrap the phones one at a time (for whatever reason) you would have to drop in from your inventory while in a settlement, switch to workshop view, then point at it on the ground and scrap will be an option.
this is what you have to do if you don't want to waste materials

Screw that. What you're saying totally makes sense, but there is no way in hell I'm taking the time to scrap everything individually. Most of the time I feel like it's just 1-2 components I'm always low on (adhesive and copper), so as long as I'm utilizing that part of the junk I'm good.
ETA: Can you scrap from the transfer screen in the main workshop toolchest?

All you have to do is press square.

That was me edited question. If you can scrap from the transfer screen with square, then just pressing it 1000 times in the junk column should be pretty easy.
But to drop all of it from your inventory individually to scrap it on the ground? No thanks.

no the only way to scrap right now is to take the items out and put them on the ground
also when you're upgrading your weapons, you get a screen that shows which of your material will be used for the upgrade. once you upgrade, you lose that item and any other material in it that wasn't used for that particular upgrade.

How many pages? I will copy/paste that crap.

If you use an item with multiple components to craft something else, it will destroy the other components not used in the process.
For example if you were to use a gold watch as a gears component, it will destroy the gold. However, if you break the watch down beforehand, you get all the raw materials.
To scrap junk, you can drop it on the ground in a settlement and just use the scrap function in builder mode.

I'm confused. Last night, I went to the work bench and pressed one button and it scrapped all of my junk and stored it.
ETA: I think I pressed square when facing the work bench to "transfer".

That's just storing. Not scrapping.

Ah, carry on.

Yea you can unload all the junk off at the workbench in one button, but it doesn't scrap it. Just having it stored allows things to be made from the components but disposes any component from that item that isn't used in crafting.
That said I need to find more copper for electricity.

Well the idiot crackers should give you a "scrap" option in the workbench. Eff.

quit your bitching!!! I know why I can't move in build mode, my movement keys are the arrow keys which are the same keys used to navigate the build menu.

I agree, why isn't there a scrap button in the workbench? I have no idea. Even a "scrap all junk" would be sufficient
