people think it has to do with duping.
either blizz is taking the servers down to revert a large duping effort
or
dupers are crashing the servers via unsavory means to initiate their dupe method
the servers going down is either a fix for duping, or a step in the duper's new process

My best guess is they’re lagging the servers while either vendoring or trading. This is a common method of duping in online games.

No one wants to trade shite. If it aint sorc/pally torches tal chest/ammy/shako its like a damn wasteland. I been trying to trade tgods, 40 pgems, ik helm and maul, 5os flail laying of hands, trang armor, aldur armor and boots and other stuff with no bites at all

you enter a command to make the game thing there are 8 players in the game so the difficulty goes up along with the potential for drops
