From what I have read, it's still the same core game underneath, "quirks and all," just with a new coat of paint and a few modern improvements.

my biggest hurdle was knowing what loot to keep and throw away. i was always keeping stuff because it had better stats, but then had friends say, "that's trash, use this." when comparing the two, the items my friends gave me always had "worse" stats than what i was using, but somehow, it really was better than what i was using. i'll never understand it.

I wouldn’t start on D3. I’ve played D2 religiously and I fired up D3 for the first time since release and I was very confused on what the heck to do. I would download the free bezelbub HD D1 mod just to give you a feel of the Diablo universe

You have sheet DPS vs real DPS with D3. Stuff like increased cold, fire, lightning, etc damage isn't figured into your sheet damage numbers as well as increased damage to specific skills.
I've come to the conclusion that D3 is an actual child's game when compared to D2 or PoE. I'm super amped about the D2 remaster after hearing the developers.

i played this game so fricking much i switched to hardcore mode just to keep it interesting.
i lost 5 different lvl 80 trap Assassins in hardcore mode. It was so fun i kept coming back for more.

I don't think it has a steep learning curve. Like most things you'll be able to grasp the basics pretty quickly and as time goes on you'll learn more and more about perfecting a class. Luckily, a lot of content creators figure out the PERFECT items/skills to maximize a specific character so if you want perfection you just follow the template. It's a lot like skyrim in the sense that you can build whatever you want, however you want. I was obsessed with D2 when I was 12-13 so it can't be too complex.

I broke a minimum of 2 keyboards playing hardcore back in the day. It was exhilarating and intense, but man it is crushing to lose a character you’ve invested so many hours in to building.

that act 5 corpse explosion frick (N-something) dropped the highest level loot in the game , but frick him.
getting the Hell mode act 4 title for beating Diablo always felt great. Fight could last 10 minutes+ due to having to kite him around
