I assume you need to progress further into acts to get the three socket items? Or can you just farm Countess until you get the runes and a socket item?

Depending on how high the runes are you need farming countess can be pretty efficient. I ran her I think 8 times yesterday over the course of the day and got all my runes for my spirit shield and then some. I just have to find a shield to put them in now

I'm playing on PS4 having fun so far. I created an online character but I haven't joined a game yet with other people in it. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Anyone have any tips?

First timer. Just bought it last night at around midnight and that was a mistake. I could have played until the sun rose.
Not really sure what I’m doing. I’m guessing the idea is to just get good gear and make sure you have enough scrolls or gems to revel it’s true power?
Is there an online market in game or just NPC’s to sell your stuff?
Any advice is appreciated.

There are npcs in town you buy/sell from. They also give you quests that tell you what to do

Items are what drives diablo 2. Trading with other players is a gamble at best. Some are easy and others hack and scam you.

The most common scam is that they will put an item in the trade window then say they are full and go to the stash then put an item with the same item art in the window. If you don't hover over the item again to make sure it's the real item, you will be sad.

Yes and no. You can buy 3os armors from the vendors in town. 2os helms and 3os shield as well.
But, the further in the game you get the items will have a potential for more sockets.
For example normal cow level only drops up to 3os crystal swords. Crystal swords from hell cows can have up to 6os.
You can definitely buy a 3os chain mail from Charsi normal, though.
OS = open sockets
If you want to refresh the vendors items either run out of town and right back in or take a waypoint further into the act then take wp back to town. If other people are in the game it may not refresh. I had that issue with playing with my brother but in my private solo game they were refreshing.
There is an online market via trading in game and via d2jsp.com. you find a nice item, sell it to another user for forum gold(FG). The you use said FG to buy a different item you may need. You can buy FG with real money but I DO NOT recommend buying FG as you will likely lose interest in the game paying to get items.
The thrill of D2 is finding that GG item you've been looking for days to find. Even if you can't use it you can trade it to someone for an item or FG and get something you need.
Buying items gives no thrill and was the reason D3 AH was so terrible.
