Also, look at what I found while trying to squeeze in some bounties a few minutes ago. Sword of Crota on Earth
There was a "Sword of Crota" knight that showed up out of nowhere and I was like WTF? So I killed him and it said pick up the relic, so I did and then the public event started. I think Bungie is testing the Swords like they did the Pikes during the Beta.

That's fricking awesome. I think the sword mechanic was very underused in Destiny.

Still need them for legendary things. If you're a 30 you probably won't have much use for shards.

You don't think you'll need them after 12/9? I would think if you have three characters to level up to 32, you'd need a good bit.

Ascendant materials will be needed and used to upgrade anything Legendary (regardless of when you obtained it or where it came from).
ALL Exotics now require and Exotic Shard for the final upgrade slot (regardless of when it was released or where it came from).

Yeah. I was just talking to the lvl 30 scenario that would think that they wouldn't need shards anymore. They will def still need them.
