so can I die or go to the hunters dream and that gate to the short cut will still be open?

this would be yes

just faced the first boss and died. woke up in the dream world with the doll now awake, returned to the first lantern and the gate was still open

One if my only complaints is that you have to go back to the hunter's dream to reset enemies. I liked DS's reset when you sat at the campfire.

I went with axe too. The important part of this game, unlike DS, is to be more aggressive.

Blocking isn't available.

ATTACK!

Just not too much.

the aoe spinning damage the axe does when held with two hands is nasty

I need to find that. Was it a building door you went through?

I linked a video on page 12 or so that really clearly shows the path to unlock it. If you can get to the bridge or the house with shotgun wheelchair guy, you're nearly there.

I did go through a house with creepy wheelchair guy. Then I went upstairs to a bridge where some beasts killed me quickly.

Eta: just watched the video, I knew I should have kept going through that door

I like this much more than DS.

I read stay away from Amelia till you were really ready to kill her because the game gets much harder after killing her. Harder mobs are switched out. And it turns to night and i like the red sky.

You can go to Hemwick instead and beat the boss there, which is fairly easy. It's one of my favorite places in the game so far. Resi 4 flashbacks.

I fought Father what's his face for like 3 hours last night but could never finish him off. I would always get him down to about 1/5 health and he would just frick me up. Any tips for when he transforms to a beast?

Got him on my 5th try.. Just target and dodge while in human form and strike after his combo/one swing. hit him with 2 swings and dodge again. I barely took damage by the 5th try.

Also if you are good at parrying, shoot him and visceral in human form. I'm not good at that yet so I stayed in two-handed axe mode and used L2 swing and R1 attacks.

When he turns into a beast, dodge like a mofo and if you can manage to hit him with molotovs he becomes WAY easier. Hit him with 2 and he's almost dead, if you manage 3 he should be dead or one weapon swing from dead.

He was kicking my arse till I learned to dodge more efficient.

Is it safe to say that using the axe 2 handed is slower than 1 handed?

It's slower but gives you way more range.

I almost exclusively use the two-handed axe's L2 swipe attack combo and when I get the drop on mobs/huge trolls or beasts I try to sneak up and do the charged R2 attack.

The charged R2 attack is sick, it will spin 4 times and KNOCKDOWN any enemy that gets hit by it. Then you can run up and L2 them for a kill.

After fortifying my axe and upping STR a good bit, one single charged R2 attack takes out everyone at that bonfire at the beginning

I was raging at this game the first 3-4 hours I played it but after settling in, it's so much fun.

I explored the mechanics a good bit one handed, I need to try 2 handed some

I'm the opposite, I rely way to much on the L2 sweep because it can hit multiple enemies, I need to practice with one handed so I can use my gun to parry.

I hadn't thought to use L2 with 2 handed. Charge attack is holding R2 right?

Yea charged attack is holding R2.

But with two-handed weapons L2 turns into a left handed/sided swing. The axe's L2 combo is sick. Combine it with a charged R2 attack to set up and the axe almost is overpowered now.

And two days ago I was dying every 5-10 minutes

I got in a great rhythm last night until the bridge with the 2 beasts. They murdered my arse. Then I went back and they smoked me again.
