Bumping this thread to add a question or two. Really wish I had done some research before deciding to get my daughter one of these for Christmas. The damn accessories and games are adding up.

So here's what I got so far:

Console
Wired pro-controller(wireless one was $70. WTF? Is that standard)
Carrying case that comes with a screen protector
Mario Kart, plus steering wheel.
Mario Galaxy(more for me)
Splattoon

Do I really need an SD card out of the gate? Someone in the family got her Just Dance game as well, so she'll have 4 games right out of the gate.

Is the wired pro controller fine, or should i just suck it up and get the wireless?

Anything else I'm missing? Lot of good suggestions in here, and I'm really dumb on gaming consoles. Last one I really played on was a PS2.

Considering you appear to be buying cartridge based games, you're probably fine without the SD card for now, though you might want to pick one up for cheap just to have some extra storage for the future.

The controller situation depends on how many people in your household will be playing the system simultaneously. If it's just going to be you and your daughter playing, the wired USB controller is probably fine (think about the length of your USB cable too and consider an extension cable). If you think your wife and another child or friend might be playing, you may want to look into buying another set of joy-con's instead of the USB so you can "split" the 2 sets into 4 controllers.

That also, of course, depends on how much you or anyone else dislikes the joy-cons in a split or combined setup. I'm fine playing a "big" game like Mario Odyssey in the "joy-con grip" but I know some people hate it and must have the pro controller. I can also play something like Mario Kart with 1/2 a joy-con for short sessions without too much discomfort but prefer a full controller if I'm going to be playing for a while.

Yeah I bought all those before realizing they could be downloaded. I'll wait on the SD card, and I guess see how the wired controller works. $70 for a damn controller blew my mind.

It'll mostly be her and her friends playing it.

Most controllers are $50+, and for $70 you actually get two controllers so it isn't SO Bad.

This is the part I dread when I eventually get one. Prices are insane.

Yep. I'm around $500 in already. Naive me thought the console came with all you needed to get going. I guess it does, except for games, but then I read all this other stuff that is recommended for the best experience.

She better play with this damn thing.
