So disappointing. Same CPU/RAM internals. Added a stand, LAN port, and changed the screen. And upcharged $50. Still no bluetooth audio. Absurd.

Was waiting for a Pro / 4k docked version. Even if they have to do it by putting a dedicated GPU in the dock. I'll be holding out for a while longer I guess.

Yeah zero reason one to grab if you already have one and mostly play docked. I’m good

I've been wanting to buy a switch for a while but was hoping for a price drop. This is telling me that won't ever be happening so might as well just buy an OG one since I'll be playing mostly docked.

Is it even 720p? Thought the screen was same resolution as base switch and I thought that was a sub 720p resolution.

The new dock with an Ethernet port is nice. I may get that.

The OLED display is 720p, so yeah, pixel density will drop. And if Nintendo doesn't implement proper color management and adjusted sRGB color profiles, then some games are going to look like garbage.

And the ethernet port would have been nice...in 2017. It's worthless now that 80+ million Switch consoles have been sold with the overwhelming majority of people playing them over exceptionally poor WiFi connections. It doesn't matter if you play via ethernet on your 1 Gbps connection - your play session will be a stuttery hell because the people you're going to be playing with are playing over the Starbucks WiFi.

It's actually very likely Nintendo is getting these 720p OLED panels from Samsung at a cheaper price than the LCD panels in the current Switch. The new plastic stand is basically a negligible cost addition. The RJ-45 port in the dock should have been there in 2017.

And that's it. A Tegra Switch with a cheap 720p OLED panel, an ethernet port in the dock (which is largely worthless at this point), and a redesigned stand. That would be fine if this were $299 and immediately replacing the current Switch, but Nintendo is slapping a $50 price increase on this thing and positioning it as a premium device.

They are so incredibly out of touch, and I honestly have no idea who this is for. Hardcore fans won't be interested, as they were all expecting a Switch Pro with an Ampere based GPU capable of utilizing DLSS. Casual fans and soccer moms won't care, because they have no idea what the hell "OLED" even means, and if they do they certainly won't care enough to rush out and buy the new model, or pay the extra $50 for one when the $299 Switch is sitting right next to it on the store shelf.

This doesn't even really fit with Nintendo from a historical perspective, as the New 3DS released three years after the original model with substantially more powerful internal hardware across the board. Yet the Switch is going to hit its 5-year anniversary using the same prehistoric Tegra SoC.

It really is all quite baffling

All this means is Nintendo is going to stretch the Switch out even longer, will be interesting to see when even Nintendo games are starting to struggle for the system right now.

As are 80% of Nintendo's decision.

Honestly, this will sell like hotcakes. And the current model will continue selling up to it's release.

This refresh is a cheap bridge to Switch 2... there will be no Switch Pro.

I'm glad I'm not a Nintendo person. But even I had a slight itch to grab the new one if it was a nice modern upgrade.

Exact opposite and more money? Ya no chance.

What's their contract situation with Nvidia? AMD SoC would have been no problem I'm sure.

The Switch Pro exists, it's just not coming this year.

kopite on twitter is a legit Nvidia leaker. He leaked out Nvidia's entire Ampere GPU lineup months before it released. Clocks, Tensor Cores, RT cores....everything. And he was right on all of it. He clearly has a direct source within Nvidia.

He's posted a bit on a new SoC being built for the next Switch - LINK

Codename is T239, based on Nvidia's Orin SoC. A78 ARM CPU cores, Lovelace based Nvidia GPU with Tensor Cores for DLSS. Internal name is Black Knight.

I think a lot of the confusion for today stemmed from the fact that Bloomberg erroneously conflated the DLSS Switch Pro with the Switch revision that we got today. They got word of an "OLED Switch" ramping up production soon for release in September/October of this year, and automatically assumed this was the Switch Pro all of their other sources told them about. When in reality, it was two separate devices.

So while it's disappointing that the Pro isn't coming this year, Nintendo absolutely has some kind of next-gen Switch SoC capable of DLSS that they're working on with Nvidia. And the fact that kopite has codenames and internal product names means it's pretty far along. Does that mean a release is coming next year? Hard to say. 2022-2023 for that device seems likely, and it will absolutely be a "next-gen" Switch in terms of the hardware irrespective of whether Nintendo markets it as the "Switch 2".

Of course, none of this changes the disappointment of today's device. Like I said, it would be fine is this was just a $299 replacement of the current Switch, but the $50 increase for a Tegra OLED Switch is laughable, especially for something that is probably costing Nintendo less to actually manufacture than the current Switch.

Good insider info, I had heard some of this, not all, but the timing and the process tells me this is Switch 2. Basically, they are going to have this new device get closer to the Ps5/XSX.

What that really means is a little better performance of your Doom-style ports compared to the Switch ports of bigger console releases, the specs will still be far away, but they'll get closer.

If they can get 80-90% of the 3rd party AAA titles, they'll clean up again.

Oh yeah, this is a total Nintendo WTF moment. There's no reason for this. Maybe they are trying to determine what the draw is (will people pay for more storage and incorporated LAN? How important are portable specs, etc.?) I mean, we all know the answer, but sometimes Nintendo likes to do these weird experiments to get data.

It's a dumb release... but like I said, it will sell. Heck, I have a release Switch and may get one of these and give my release to my nephews so they can have a second Switch.
