Minecraft....any of you play it?

I am certain that you guys will shite on me for playing minecraft, but i do. I bought it for my 8yr old, he never played it. So one day I decided to check it out, and I have been hooked ever since. Problem is I suck at it, and end up just mining all the time and getting killed. I decided to start paying attention and trying to do some enchantments and messing around in the nether. Anyone who plays, have any tips, tricks they want to share?

I play with my daughter. We don't do much building anymore...she likes to go to Cubecraft server and play egg wars and sky wars which is PVP minecraft and a lot more enjoyable to me then simple mining and building.

I remember when there was a board server for Xbox here. I played it a good bit when that was going on.

I cant get it downloaded on my PC, I bought the game and wiped it when I reset everything and now I cant seem to get it back without paying for the game again

The nether update has been great. I spend about half my time there. I have been trying to link up my portals, but I always get side tracked. I have been trying to set up some automated mob farms for food. I think my next project is an iron farm. I can't stay alive long enough in the nether to build a gold farm that I have watched video's about. Those damn ghasts keep sneeking up and blowing me up.
It took my about a month and a half of mining before I found out that I can only find diamonds on levels 11-14. Even still I don't find very many. And I can never enchant anything worth a damn because I can't stay alive long enough to get to 30xp. I got to 32 once, and promptly went swimming in lava before I could get back to the surface.

I still do hardcore runs every so often.
Tips
Best depth for diamonds is y5-y12
Keep a stack of cobblestone on you. Can get you out of tight spots.
Mine nether quartz (in nether) for easy levels.
Don't enchant anything if you're under Lvl 30. Also look up how to reroll enchantments.
Write significant coords down ie. your home base, cool mineshaft, village, mansion, etc.
Farm mob spawners for a bit before breaking them. Decent xp farm.
Travel with a crafting table and furnace so you can craft/smelt on the fly.

Shoot. Back in the day we had us a pretty legit shared world on this board. Those were good times.

I try to avoid it as much as possible, but my daughters play it and sometimes I get roped in. I hate it.

I stopped destroying these things and just putting candles around them to stop the mobs from spawning. Can I get them in my inventory with a silk touch pick ax?

Both of my sons (11 and 7) play it and enjoy it. We play together sometimes. When I get bored I just start killing them and then they don't want me to play anymore. :)
