Microsoft to boost Xbox One GPU performance by making Kinect optional
Thoughts? Starting to wonder just how soon we might see a xbox one without kinect package. And I have both, they both have their pros and cons but I'm sensing a little panic.

the specs are almost identical, save for the GPU where the PS4 holds the clear advantage.

To make matters worse, game developers working on the Xbox One are coding with one hand tied behind their backs. Microsoft requires that all games reserve 10% of the GPU’s capacity for the Kinect, even if the game doesn’t use it. That’s split up into 8% for the Kinect video features and 2% for Kinect voice. In an effort to give a boost to its console, Microsoft is expected to issue a system patch that removes the requirement that games save that 8% for Kinect video.

In one recent embarrassment, the frame rate of the new Tomb Raider title was found to be only 30 fps on the Xbox, but 60 fps on the PS4. This is something that an 8% bump in GPU power could help with.

Hasn't Xbone outsold the PS4?
Doesn't sound much like panic, but more like listening to consumers.

Excuse me, not panic. But absolute deviation from centering this gaming console AROUND kinect.

Yea, i'd agree with that

lulz
I knew the Kinect forcing to be bundled was a mistake

From what I have read, not sure on the credibility of it, devs are asking MS to allow them to use some locked resources devoted to OS and Kinect. They said no at first, but now with this whole "resolution-gate" as they called it, blowing up, MS has apparently reconsidered.

So Microsoft just being Microsoft then? Haha

At the same time, this doesn't say they are making a Kinectless bundle. It seems like they are just saying that if your game doesn't use Kinect, the 8% of the total 10% of blocked off Kinect resources can be unblocked and used.
ETA:
Originally, all 10% was blocked whether you were going to utilize Kinect or not.

Except they really aren't. The UI control via the kinect out ways any negatives you could think of. They are not deviating from any plan, everyone has a kinect and every developer knows this. If they want to design a use for it has just become a choice by the developers.

Shhh.....they are ditching the kinect man

For what? 8% will make very little difference. Instead of a 40% power advantage over the XBone GPU it will be 32%.

While this small tweak isn’t going allow the Xbox One to see a significant leap in power, it could help developers make more stable games when it comes to frame rate, and possibly give them more room to work with when trying to hit 1080p native.

I'm just wondering why they blocked it all off to begin with though.
Those resources may have been set aside for the future if Kinect ever needed it.

Ask Xbone users their thoughts on it and you will get 99% positive reviews of the Kinect.

more performance
But it's still significantly behind the PS4? Hence why the devs are bitching and M$ is finding any way to give it a bit more power. Like the article says, this will do very little but good for M$ to try and help out the devs.

Haha, 4.2 million to 3 million.
